Browse failed to start

Hello,

Quite often I get an error “Browse failed to start” when starting Browse, after having used it successfully. It is hard to identify and reproduce the conditions leading to the error, but when it happens the only recourse is to reboot the XO and then it starts OK. Would appreciate some information on troubleshooting this;

XO-1

Build 883

Sugar 0.94.1

Browse 129.1

Flash 11 plugin installed (if that is relevant)

Re: Browse failed to start

Can you attach the log of Browse when do not start?

Look in your directory /home/olpc/.sugar/default/logs a file named
as org.laptop.WebActivity-1.log
(you will have one file for every time you run the activity,
select the file with the bigger number)
You can use the activity Terminal or Log to get the file.

[ANNOUNCE] Harmonic Distribution 0.1 development release

Hi all!

This is the first, at least in such composition, public development
release of projects that are being developed within the Harmonic
Distribution effort, initially started to support Hexoquinasa
(Peru, Puno) pilot[6]. This release should be treated as a kind of
preview of some basic ideas behind Harmonic Distribution and its
components.

More information about Harmonic Distribution might be found on Wiki [1].
In short, it is a system approach to provide a basis to support activity
of Sugar Learning Platform participants. It consist of two major parts:

* Basic software

  Accessible from common packages repository on all supported platforms[2]
  from Sweets Distribution[3]. There are/will-be two meta components[4]:

  * Sweets Desktop
    General purpose desktop of Sucrose and instruments to integrate it
    with the rest of the system

  * Sweets Server
    General purpose school server that consists of Server Kit components
    (that might be used on its own).

  This software exist in form of short-term support (mostly for
  individual usage) and long-term support (mostly for deployments)
  forms.

* Basic services

  These services will be provided via Sugar Network[5]:

  * Sharing Community software, i.e., the rest of software on top of
    Basic one
  * Sharing different kinds of content, e.g., artifacts created
    by Sugar Activities, books, etc.
  * Collaborative work between Sugar Network participants to improve
    Software, Content and learning process in general

  Sugar Network will be served from central [master] server and
  arbitrary amount of distributed [node] servers (when connectivity is a
  problem). For example, within Hexoquinasa pilot, XO-1.5 laptops will be
  used for that purpose.

== In this release ==

This release is about:

* SweetsDistribution:Factory repository with Glucose-0.94 and
  Sugar Network client, that will be used in Puno pilot,
  development version
* Sugar Network server (http://18.85.44.120:8000) that contains
  activities mirrored from Activities Library

To install Factory repository on all supported platforms[2], type the
following commands in terminal:

    wget http://download.sugarlabs.org/packages/sweets-distribution.sh
    sudo sh sweets-distribution.sh select Factory

This command will attach Sweets Distribution repository (Factory) to the
system (technically skilled people can do the same by attaching
repositories[7] directly). Then, install "sweets-desktop" package using
native packaging management system.

To launch newly installed Sugar Shell, click "Sugar" item in Education
menu or type in terminal:

    sweets-sugar-emulator

Installed packages, most of them, will not interfere with the current
system. For example, it will be possible to run new Shell on XO laptop
(with OS based on Fedora-14) even from native Sugar (but will be better
to start sweets-sugar-emulator from Gnome session because there will be
glitches between two Sugars).

To enable Sugar Network integration in Sugar Shell,

* in Sweets Control Panel component,
* enable "Integrate Sweets Distribution features" checkbox
* restart Sugar Shell

After restart,

* Home view will be empty - internal process of Sugar Network
  integration is in intermediate stage
* use F8 or activities bar to open Sugar Network client (icon with
  three dots in a circle)

In F8 view,

* browse activities on the server
* full-featured text searching
* launch activities (only pure Python and without dependencies)
* in detailed view of activity, there is an initial implementation of
  new support resource form (question, idea, problem)
* support resources can be browsed in detailed view
* it is also possible to browse system wide support resources and
  users

== v0.2 plan ==

http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Platform_Team/Harmonic_Distribution/1.0/Todo#0.2

* continue working on Sugar Network client application
* support basic deployment procedures that need to be implemented
  for Hexoquinasa pilot.

Logs Appreciated indeed, I've been using Browse 129 and 129.1 on both XO-1.5 and XO-1.75 w/o these starting problems. So I'm assuming that these could be memory related errors  when there are too many activities open on the XO-1.0.

Cheers.

Re: Browse failed to start

As is typical, as soon as one reports the error it starts to work perfectly. As soon as it happens again I will send the log.

MP4 playback on XO-1.75?

Hi all,

I just tried playing back the downloaded version of the recent littleBits TED talk ( http://www.ted.com/talks/ayah_bdeir_building_blocks_that_blink_beep_and_teach.html ) on an XO-1.75 but couldn't get it to work regardless of what I tried. In the past I always used the mplayer version that came with Flavio's JAMedia Activity to watch videos on XOs but that doesn't seem to work. Under Gnome the Movie Player asks for additional codecs but upon trying to install them there's a long error message which I think is trying to tell me that the necessary codecs aren't available for the ARM architecture.

To make a long story short: Is there a way to watch MP4 videos on an XO-1.75 at this point in time? :-)

Thanks,
Christoph

I dont have an 175 but I'd hazard a guess at first transcoding to ogg theora?
there are IIRC online media converting sites.

The fashionable drawing rooms of London have always been happy to accept
outsiders -- if only on their own, albeit undemanding terms. That is to
say, artists, so long as they are not too talented, men of humble birth,
so long as they have since amassed several million pounds, and socialists
so long as they are Tories.

How to get in-memory activity-instance?

Hi all.

I have been wanting to trying to navigate to custom URIs within
"Browse" activity, wherein the URIs are generated outside "Browse"
(i.e. the URI is neither typed in the address-bar, nor is one of the
bookmarks, nor is a "kept" link).

a)
Now, if "Browse" is being launched for the first time, this is doable
- we just need to pass a "uri" parameter during the "launch" method
(by inspecting upon the "org.laptop.WebActivity" bundle_id on the
activity being launched).

b)
For "resume" case, I SUPPOSE it refers to a case when there already is
a journal entry for "Browse", but there is no in-memory instance of
"WebActivity". Here too, we just pass "uri" as the parameter.

c)
HOWEVER, the case that bothers me is the one when there is already a
"WebActivity" instance loaded into the memory.
Here, if i could get "<in-memory-WebActivity-instance>._browser", I
will be done.

I looked into "def _create_activity(self)" in "sugar/sugarfactory.py",
and there I saw a subprocess being launched for the activity. However,
I have been unable to stumble upon the code wherein the
launch-of-activity-instances are actually called?

So, currently, is there a way, wherein we can get handle of the
currently loaded "WebActivity" python object instance (or for that
matter, any currently loaded activity python instance) ?

Will be grateful for a reply.

Regards,
Ajay

Hi Kevin,

yeah, I had thought of going that route but it would be quite a hassle compared to simply being able to play back the video... :-/

Thanks,
Christoph

I am interested in trying this out, as I am going to be doing some teacher
training workshops in remote PNG areas where there is no Internet access.
They will need to view resources that I will be making available on a server
(XS-0.6). It seems that I can't reliably install these codecs from the rpms
alone, without the XO wanting to connect and download stuff. Is there any
way I can set up the mirror server as you describe on the XS, so that I can
carry that to the remote area and have the XOs use that to get the updates?
And how?
