Permissions

If I mount a remote directory on my Mac, I have to enter a user/pass
that should clear permissions issues for BBEdit to edit anything
directly in that mounted directory.

Yet, whenever I try to open a doc from that directory, I get the
"-5000 you don't have the proper permissions" error from BBEdit. Why
doesn't BBEdit respect the Finder's security?

Re: Google Groups, Alternate Emails and what not

I don't know if anyone is still here and if so, having trouble with the last minute transition to Google
Groups, but I figured out why I (and others) were probably having problems associating various email
addresses to the new group.

There are two different places you can associate email addresses with your Google accounts and they don't connect:

1) in your GMAIL account settings, you can associate additional email addresses to your GMAIL account so
that you can have messages appear to be sent from different accounts; and

2) in your GOOGLE account settings, you can associate additional email addresses to your GOOGLE account so
that various Google-things see them (groups, calendar, etc.).

Doing #1, which I and others did, doesn't make your additional email addresses available for Google
Groups. You need to do #2 (which the instructions below are for -- I just thought I could ignore them, since I
had already done #1..). Both processes involve adding your addresses and then dealing with verification
emails, so they're very similar -- but not the same!

Apparently not, it appears you can just sign up using a normal email
address and password.

Re: [ANN] moving BBEdit-Talk to Google Groups!

Of course, the thing that really sucks rocks about Google Groups
(well, in addition to its flakey interface) is that the E-mail
digest I get is not in the required format to be read using
Mailsmith's Open Digest command, which means that I now get the
choice of

     - Wading through all the crap included in the digest
contents, trying to actually read the text enclosed therein
(which was why I liked using Open Digest);

     - Giving up on digests and being bombarded by separate
E-mails rather than infrequent digests so that I can scan them
using Mailsmith's Browser; or

     - Using the inefficient and ugly Google-designed browser
interface instead of my nice, clean, easy-to-use Bare
Bones-designed E-mail client.

Feh.

Can I re-read a file from an SFTP server?

I have files that reside on a remote SFTP server and change.
Is it possible to force a re-read of the file without closing and reopening – which loses all my window settings?
Or conversely, is it possible to save window settings for remote files?

To my knowledge, it isn't necessary to have a gmail account (I'd
never have one, in fact).

If you go to <http://groups.google.com/>, click Sign In in the
top right corner of the window, click the 'Create an account
now' link, and then use your preferred E-mail address to create
the account, all the Google groups mail will be sent to that
address. Worked fine for me.

[ANN] moving BBEdit-Talk to Google Groups!

Good afternoon folks,

We're currently in the process of moving all our product discussion lists
to Google Groups.

Next weekend (June 7/8), we will shut this list down and all traffic will
be on the 'BBEdit Talk' Google Group. We hope you'll take a moment to
subscribe and join us there!

  <http://groups.google.com/group/bbedit>

Please note that historical archives of this list are not currently
available through the Google group. We're investigating ways to get the
archives up to Google. In the meantime, they remain available via
<http://www.listsearch.com/BBEdit> at the pleasure of LassoSoft, whose
hosting of the archives these many years we greatly appreciate.

Regards,

 Patrick Woolsey

disable tooltips?

it is possible to disable the tooltips that pop up in the documents
drawer? whenever i use the documents drawer to switch to a different
document (i.e. mouse over to the list and click a filename), a couple
seconds later a tooltip pops up and covers up part of my editing
window. i guess the correct way to switch documents would be to move
the cursor somewhere else after clicking but i always forget to do
that (unless of course i'm actually editing the document), and it's
inefficient if my next action is going to be to click another
document. the info in the tooltip is repeated in the "file path" field
at the top of the editing window anyway so the tooltip is never useful
to me.

i've found a plist hack that increases the tooltip delay system-wide
but a lot of applications seem to ignore this, including bbedit (i
have NSInitialToolTipDelay set to 500000 but i still see tooltips all
the time).
