producing Mails to get a digest finally

Hi,

as e-letter reported problems with digest mails:
http://www.mail-archive.com/discuss <at> documentfoundation.org/msg06243.html

I subsribed in digest
mode to this list to do some tests.

Subscribe link is: test+subscribe-digest <at> documentfoundation.org if
someone cares :o))

feel free to bomb mails here to get a fat digest :o))

Re: producing Mails to get a digest finally

Hi Friedrich, *,

Thank You for monologizing that consequently and: sorry for the
fullquote :o))

This is an answer to Your mail generated by the digest mechanism.
Aparently - as seen here - text is recognized and quoted correctly by
kmail so the mail itself obviously is readable.

Let's further see, whether there are issues with in-reply/references.

So there seem to be an issue with gmail. Probably the base64 encoded
mail content isn't of it's taste.

Re: producing Mails to get a digest finally

Hi all,

tried same procedure from Thunderbird
(Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; de; rv:1.9.2.17) Gecko/20110414
Lightning/1.0b2 Thunderbird/3.1.10)

who obviously has similar problems like gmail. I can see my original
text in the extracted digest mail but starting an answer generates mess
- so there seem to be problems passing the content to the editor unit.

Hmmm - no clue about rfcs for this but I consider this beeing buggy
behaviour.

Try to attach screenshot from extracted Mail.

Gruß/regards

Friedrich

Didn't follow this thread, just saw your mail by coincidence... can you
maybe send details to webmaster <at> ? Maybe it's a bug somewhere...

This is a dummy message. It has no reflection on the sender, nor the
receiver.

Re: Digest of test <at> documentfoundation.org issue 37 (178-182)

Unfortunately, the digest did not include any base64 encoded messages this time.

So all I can say is that gmail is unsuitable for handling
digest-subscription, as it displays all messages inline. It's not
possible to reply to the single message (well, at least not if you
want to preserve a thread.
The only way to preserve a thread would be to request a single message
(using the get<number> mailinglist command (I remember Friedrich and
Florian did wonder where the message-numbers are used at all) and use
that single message as basis for the reply, but no user will do that)
- on the other hand, gmail users will very likely not use
digest-subscription (as there just is no need for this, if you don't
want to follow a thread, you can mute it and won't be bothered with
mail of the same thread.

The message itself is a multipart/digest one, with correctly delimited
messages and complete headers (also including the mail-archive.com
one) for each single mail - so "real" mailclients that don't handle
those properly/cannot even display the messages are buggy as hell and
don't deserve the name.

So again: Only problem with gmail is that it doesn't show them as
individual messages, but shows them all inline, in one message.

For reference/Documentation purposes a fullquote of the digest-mail as
received/displayed/what you get when you use reply in gmail without
editing:
