stats box status?

It's been a week now - is there any progress on getting stats-box back
up?

Maybe they are still trying to find outdated hardware to fix the statsbox? :P Or maybe RC5-72 is done(OMG 1% and 99% to go lol)

Re: stats box status?

it does seem though that the stats failures keep ocurring at an increasing frequency rate.  Makes one wonder what the host system(s) are.

Re: stats box status?

We're hoping to swap some electronics in the failed power supply this weekend and get it back online next week, if everything works out.

Getting a replacement machine for it might be desirable in the long term as well, but so far we'd been hoping that wouldn't be necessary.   The current hardware is described here:  http://faq.distributed.net/?file=63

Gmail Engine Client

Hi all.

Would it make sense to use the Google's cloud to crack keys ?

My programming skills are below the challenge so could someone step in here ?

As far as I went the client has to be implemented in Python or Java so
I guess it would be quite slow.
There is some quota for free CPU resources so the client could run for
free for xx minutes/hours per day,
this times the number of clients...well If it is possible why not ?

Looking forward to try the first beta client ;)

I'm for replacing the machine that the stats server runs on and I'm
willing to donate some money to buy the new hardware. If a computer can't
run normally with two out of three power supplies, something is wrong with
the hardware.

Re: stats box status?

I'm of the same mind as John as the whole purpose of raid racks and
multiple power supplies is for other hardware to take over the load when
one of the items fails. That isn't happening anymore apparently. The
other item is that when you start getting into proprietary hardware that
can't utilize common off the shelf replacement hardware then that is a
major negative for that particular proprietary hardware as it cannot be
easily and rapidly replaced. A two week outtage (which is what this is
shaping up to be) is a bit much for a power supply failure really. And
I'd also be willing to chip in some bucks if the project were to go for
replacing the stats server.

i wouldn't even try it... especially not if it has to be written in java or
python... and then my question is, are you and everyone who wants to do this
going to have to set up a cloud account or wouldn't it be better for there to be
one cloud with a special cloud client al la deep crack or some such?

Re: Gmail Engine Client

yes this is possible, I did some research some times ago.

but the implementation...

good place to start reading is http://code.google.com/appengine/
