RE: Time to Start?
Our practice upon opening a new project or releasing new clients has been as follows: 1) Prepare as many clients/perproxies as we can for the release. Make the files available internally. 2) Start the master 3) Release the files internally (DCTI staff only) 4) Post the files to the ftp and web sites 5) Mention the existence of the files in #distributed 6) Post a .plan (mailed out nightly) 7) Post to announce <at> /rc5 <at> 8) Update the homepage, if appropriate Notice that the lag between step 4 and step 8 can be as long as a week. The best way to know ASAP when the project is open is to hang around #distributed (irc.distributed.net). Yes, we get to start the project a couple of hours before anyone else. That's because (a) we use this time as a last-minute sanity check that we aren't releasing a monster, and (b) perks of being on staff. (Doesn't matter, we can't win anyway.) No guarantees that we will do it this way again, but we probably will because it helps us avoid a single mad rush on our website. __ Bruce Wilson <bwilson@...> PGP KeyID: 5430B995, http://www.toomuchblue.com/ "I want to move to Theory. Re: Time to Start?
I've been thinking and want to know how the starts of RC5-72 would be if we look at retired addresses. Last time on OGR-25 we got all the retired email-accounts in RC5-64 also in OGR-25. Is it possible to go clean with the same address? Otherwise we must create 2 (or more) addresses, 1 for OGR-25 and 1 for RC5-72 to start with 0 retirements in a new project. That's not very userfriendly. Maybe it's an idea that members can delete old ones from the list or that addresses which are unused for a long time (like 6 months or so) go to the trash bin. If that's not possible maybe it's an option to start all over in a new project without earlier retirements in other contests? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bruce Wilson" <bwilson@...> To: <rc5@...> Sent: Monday, November 04, 2002 18:11 Subject: RE: [RC5] Time to Start? > Our practice upon opening a new project or releasing new clients has > been as follows: > > 1) Prepare as many clients/perproxies as we can for the release. I'm not sure I'm understanding what you are asking. There's no reason to alter the address your dnetc clients are using just because we're rolling out a new project. Once you've retired an address you no longer have to be concerned about that address, although it makes sense that you would migrate your existing dnetc installations to use the newer, current address just for consistency's sake. I don't understand what you mean by "we must create 2 (or more) addresses". -- -- ________________________________________________________________________ |David McNett |To ensure privacy and data integrity this message| |nugget@...|has been encrypted by using dual rounds of ROT-13| |Austin, TX USA |finger nugget@... for my news and pgp|

RE: Time to Start?
I would think he means, nothing happening, by the fact that there is nothing sent to this mailing list, the announce mailing list and very little put in the .plans. You kinda have to go scrounging for the information, of which there is very little, other than the beta clients themselves being put out. -----Original Message----- From: Bruce Wilson [mailto:bwilson@...] Sent: Monday, November 04, 2002 9:19 AM To: rc5@...
