C version of ROX-Session

I've been maintaining the old version of ROX-Session (written mostly in
C) because I found that some options (eg keyboard repeat) didn't seem to
be implemented in the python rewrite. Initially I just patched it up to
work with newer versions of D-BUS, but it's since needed another minor
update and I've also recently made it change from using the old Choices
system to the XDG-based one.

This version is available by svn from
<https://rox.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/rox/branches/c-rox-session/ROX-Session>.

I previously used tags/last-c-version but I decided this branch was more
appropriate.

The most interesting point it raises, I think, is the configuration.
It would probably be a good idea to try to move some more options
into Configlets - for example, I think this should be done with
most of the options in ROX-Session, for example - one of the complaints
is that setting the language isn't in the Configuration folder: and, to
my mind, that is a valid point. I think that the 'Messages' and 'Power'
panes are probably things that shouldn't be presented to non-power
users (they are unlikely to care particularly, so long as the stuff
all works): and the configlets system is an excellent way to still
present things that power users will probably find necessary. And while
we're at it, can we make 'Show messages' pop up a different app? 'View'
on some file that errors are redirected to would be ideal - it would
obey the GTK theme, instead of always using Raleigh.
And why does the filer have its own Translation option? I can't see any
use-case where the file manager would be presented in a different
language to the whole rest of the desktop...

OroboROX themes/schemes should probably be added to the 'Appearance'
configlet, and I certainly wouldn't complain if the other config things
for it were distributed separately - the way I work, the window
manager is basically invisible, and to get these things I need to dig
around in ~/.cache/0install.net .

http://applications.linux.com/comments.pl?sid=37996&cid=95610 brings up
an interesting point, too - the ability to have the pinboard behave
like a huge view of a folder, like almost everyone else has, would
definitely be useful - as long as it behaved completely that way, right
down to the menus.

Not a particularly impressive article in my view. He doesn't seem to
have made much investigation of the configuration options provided by
*any* part of ROX.

Where are these icons that cannot be moved or deleted. I've never seen
them!

He doesn't seem to have discovered the window focus options of OrboROX.

Although the article seems to to be favourable overall, there's a
definite air of 'damning with faint praise'.

Incidentally, contrary to this persons view. I plonked one totally new
(to Linux) user in front of ROX on my machine and because I was busy
just let him get on with it. When I returned he was happily browsing
the 'net and had just printed off a letter using Abiword.

Yes, that was my wife's experience as well.

Why should the OS matter? This is about the ROX Desktop!

Fine, but neither Abiword nor the webbrowser a part of ROX or in any way
related to the project.

It matters a great deal if you know of only one way to do everything.
And don't even know there *are* other ways.

The point was he was able to find these without any prompting from me.
No 'start' menu, no Mr Clippy.

Alot of those are located in certain places because of
implementation details, not because it's the logical place for them -

In particularly, to configure OroboROX relies on the knowledge
that it is called OroboROX, even though most people will never open it
- how often do *you* click on your Window Manager's icon?

> Where are these icons that cannot be moved or deleted. I've never seen
> them!
'Can't be deleted' is true when the icon is locked, and moving is
slightly odd - the way to do it in KDE and GNOME (click-and-drag)
duplicates the icons here. Sounds like he didn't look at 'Edit item',
and didn't think "hey, everything else here uses the middle mouse
button for something, what's it do on panel items?'.

I, for one, am not surprised - rox is extremely discoverable for things
like that. But, while the situation isn't anywhere near as bad as the
article and some of the comments make out ('it makes you think in
certain ways, which are different to how Windows makes you think,
therefore it's only good for power users'), there is certainly some
room for improvement.

ROX-ALL: Install problems on Debian (python)

Hello,
i have got some problems installing the Debian package of ROX-ALL on Debian Sarge.

If i run the zero installinjector package, i get the error that the package 'python-central' is to be found
on my computer, but has not yet been configured. So the ROX package cannot be installed.
Now, after some strange error messages, telling me pythpn-central was a so-called virtual package, i
simply downloaded the latest version from de.debian.org.
When i tried to install python-central then, i recieved an error message claiming that my python version
was too old. So i tried 'apt-get upgrade python'. Nothing was to be updated.
So what can i do now? I know, this is a more apt or python-specific question, but it really has to be solved if i
want to run rox, so i posted it here.

Thanx for help in advance,
misi
