Actually it should be "Seeking Employment" since we're talking present
tense, but who's counting? I had to pass technical writing courses, yet I
still manage to fumble sentences and phrases over a decade later. Pick
wouldn't be so fun if it wasn't for that misspelled word in the sales menu
that no one has time to fix or that prompt in accounting that says "cash
reciept" which no one has even noticed. :P

[U2] [AD] Two dates for U2 users in the Uk...

All

For those of us in the Uk, a reminder of two forthcoming events:

- The Uk round of the U2 University will be in Telford October 28th to
October 30th. This is the main technical event for the IBM U2 community and
well worth the entrance fee! I'll be there if anyone wants to buy a drink...

and also

- Revelation technology are hosting a technical developers day on OI4U2
(OpenInsight for U2) on 12th November in London. For anyone who doesn't know
that product, OpenInsight is a Windows based MultiValue database with a long
history, and the latest incarnation now binds directly to U2 platforms.
Details can be found at www.revsoft.co.uk

For anyone else -

If you have or know of forthcoming events that may interest other U2 users,
please visit the U2 Users website (www.u2ug.org) and announce them via the
Advertise an Event link!

Regards

Brian

Re: [U2] Amazon EC2 and U2

Symeon asked, "Anyone any thoughts or even looked into the licensing
implications, or talked to IBM about an instance of udt or uv inside an
amazon EC2 cloud ?"

I'd send an e-mail to U2AskUs <at> us.ibm.com

U2AskUs is a great place for these kinds of questions.

[U2] Windows Task Scheduler

I am using the Windows Task Scheduler to run a job in Universe. Everything
is working great except that I can't figure out how to keep the console
window from opening when the uv.exe command is executed. The command I'm
using to run my program is c:\ibm\uv\bin\uv.exe "PHANTOM MY.PROGRAM". Is
there a switch or something to indicate that the console window should not
open?

Thanks,
Mike Roosa

RE: [U2] Updating UV/UD PE

This may be true but it really isn't a smart move even in windows, almost
everything in programming is delimited by spaces. Personally I think it was
one of the dumbest things implemented by MS.

RE: [U2] Windows Task Scheduler

Hi Mike. Three methods come to mind.

1) start /b c:\ibm\uv\bin\uv.exe "PHANTOM MY.PROGRAM"

2) Some people may prefer a script, so here is how to do it like
that. Create a text file called uvphantom.vbs with the contents
below. You can do this from BASIC and customize as required. ;)
You can also do this with just two lines but I broke it into
four, to avoid email wrapping here.

''''''''
Set objShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
uvexec = "c:\ibm\uv\bin\uv.exe "
command = """PHANTOM MY.PROGRAM"""
output = " > phantom_output.txt"
objShell.Run "cmd /c " & uvexec & command & output, 0, False
''''''''

The /c in the last line means close the a window as soon as the
command finishes, assuming a window gets a chance to open.
The 0 means hide the output (you can also use 7).
The False means don't wait for the command to finish, just spawn
the task and move on.

Now with task scheduler, execute:
	wscript c:\path\to\uvphantom.vbs

Since I know you work with C#, you can also use
System.Diagnostics.Process if you want to do more rigourous
handling of output, maybe completely wrap the process.

RE: [U2] Updating UV/UD PE

Mind you, AS ALWAYS :-), they were only coping someone else!

Ever wondered why "\" is the path delimiter in Windows? Because when Gary Kildall wrote CP/M he used "/" as a
valid character in a file name... (Okay, Unix wasn't so ubiquitous in those days.)

Cheers,
Wol

Well, I got an error with option #1, but option #2 worked fine. I'll just
go with that way for now. Thanks.

RE: [U2] Windows Task Scheduler

We run batch files from the Scheduler which use uvsh.exe to call catalogged
UV programs or Paragraphs.
