Modern Software Engineering Concepts and Practices: Advanced Approaches

A book edited by
Dr. Ali H. Dogru, Middle East Technical University, Turkey and Mr. Veli Bicer, FZI Research Center for
Information Technology, Germany

To be published by IGI Global:
http://www.modernsoftwareengineering.com/

Introduction
============
The ever-expanding field of Software Engineering continues its journey with the introduction of
emerging topics and concepts in order to solve particular problems of the modern software industry. As
one of the major fields, it has increased rapidly in recent years, in parallel with the complexity and
scale of the software systems. Addressing a wide spectrum, from traditional engineering systems to the
large, Web-scale architectures of today, new requirements always give rise to innovative approaches to
be developed either through introducing new paradigms or extending the capabilities of
well-established approaches.

Whenever a new approach emerges, software industry is also thirsty for an effective, yet simple and
published method to safely utilize the approach.
For this purpose, enactment of an emerging approach in the solution of a real world problem is as

[Dbworld] CFP: IESS 1.0 - Exploring Services Science

CALL FOR PAPERS

First International Conference on Exploring Services Science
IESS 1.0

Geneva, Switzerland, February 17-18-19, 2010

http://iess.unige.ch/

OVERVIEW
========
Services Science is not a cosmetic change of existing things. Introduced by IBM in 2002, it has now emerged
and matured in a true trans-disciplinary atmosphere. Encompassing disciplines not only in management
and engineering, it also draws from disciplines such as social and cognitive sciences, law, ethics,
economics etc. to address the theoretical and practical aspects of the challenging services industry
and its economy.

Services Science leverages methods, results and knowledge stemming from these disciplines towards the
development of its own concepts, methods, techniques and approaches thus creating the basis for true
trans-disciplinary gatherings and the production of trans-disciplinary results. Services Science is
building a concrete framework for trans-disciplinary purposes.

Thus “service” must be considered in this conference with its multiple facets: economic,
organizational, social, collective, ontological, regulatory, secure, etc. and also, of course,
implemented by means of informatics. Sometimes it is referred to as information services to distinguish
its restricted meanings in various disciplines like Economy or Informatics.

The goal of this first conference is to build upon this growing community to further study and understand
this emerging discipline. Academics, researchers and practitioners of all disciplines are expected to
contribute their results and approaches to Services Science in a trans-disciplinary setting. In order

     ============================================================

Overview

Recently, there has been increased investigation into new types of wireless sensor
networks located on or around the human body, which are generally known as body
sensor networks (BSNs). Following continuous advances in wireless communication
technologies, there has been growing interest in the design, development and deployment
of BSN systems in applications for improving people's daily life, which has led to
an increased demand for interconnecting BSNs with other emerging wireless technologies,
such as RFID technology, wireless sensor networks (WSNs), Zigbee, Bluetooth, WiBree,
video surveillance systems, WPAN, WLAN, the Internet, and cellular networks. With BSNs
being incorporated into these technologies, BSNs have become ubiquitous. As a result
of this, and due to an increased demand for advanced e-healthcare management systems
in recent years, the marketing opportunities for advanced consumer electronics and
related services have greatly increased. More and more autonomous and intelligent
applications which are closely integrated with a person's everyday life are being

                  PerNEM 2010 Call for Papers

The First Annual Workshop on Pervasive Networks for Emergency Management
(In conjunction with IEEE PerCom 2010)

              http://san.ee.ic.ac.uk/pernem2010/

         Mannheim, Germany, March 29 - April 2, 2010

Scope
-----

The events that took place on 11 September 2001 have brought to the
forefront the unique challenges that occur during a crisis, which require
effective sensing, communications and decision making with demanding time
constraints in highly dynamic environments. Pervasive systems address these
requirements by providing decision support to rescuers and evacuees,
guaranteeing communications and collecting information that is vital for
planning and organising the emergency operation. This workshop focuses on
pervasive networked sensing and decision making, both wired and wireless,
geared towards emergency management. PerNEM 2010 addresses leading edge
research in these areas through the use of sensing, communication, decision
support, simulation tools and modelling methods with focus on system design,
optimisation and experimental evaluation.
