DE <at> ICSE'09
Workshop on Domain Engineering
In Conjunction with ICSE’09
http://www.bgu.ac.il/~sturm/DE <at> ICSE09/

***************************************************************************************

EXTENDED DEADLINE: January 11th, 2009
Workshop: May 17th, 2009, Vancouver, Canada

***************************************************************************************

Domain Engineering is an engineering discipline concerned with building reusable assets, such as
specification sets, patterns, and components, in specific domains. A domain in this context can be
defined as an area of knowledge that uses common concepts for describing phenomena, requirements,
problems, capabilities, and solutions. The purpose of domain engineering is to identify, model,
construct, catalog, and disseminate artifacts that represent the commonalities and differences
within a domain. Although being applicable to different engineering disciplines, domain engineering
methods and domain specific languages (DSL) have been recently receiving special attention in the
software engineering era. Some of the reasons for this interest are the increasing variability of
applications, the need to obtain and share expertise in different, evolving domains, and the trend
towards reusing software artifacts and knowledge about them.
Domain engineering addresses two main layers: the domain layer, which deals with the representation of
domain elements, and the application layer, which deals with the software applications and systems
artifacts related to the domain. More specifically, the programs, applications, and systems are
included in the application layer, whereas their common and variable characteristics, as can be

[Dbworld] Special Issue in DAPD on P2P Data Management

Distributed and Parallel Databases Journal

Special Issue Call for Paper

Data Management in Peer-to-Peer Systems

Aim and Scope

It has been almost a decade since the Peer-to-peer (P2P) technology first emerged as a promising paradigm for distributed computing. Over the years, we have witnessed a large number of domain specific P2P systems being utilized. For example, Freenet and Gnutella enable users to share any digital files (e.g., music files, video, images); ICQ facilitates exchanges of personal messages; SETI <at> home makes computing cycles of participants available; and LOCKSS pools storage resources to archive document collections. Many data structures and overlays that support resource discovery have also been developed. These include CHORD, CAN, BATON and P-Grid.

However, the successful deployment are largely associated with sharing of files and resources; most of these P2P systems lack data management capabilities that are typically found in DBMS. The key challenges arise from the scale (large number of peers which far exceeds what traditional distributed databases can handle), the dynamism of the systems (peers can join and leave the network any time), and the lack of a global schema.

For this special issue, we invite original and high quality submissions addressing all aspects of Data Management in Peer-to-peer Systems. In particular, we would encourage systems papers that address scalability, robustness and security issues. We also welcome experience reports with applications. Topics that are of interest include but are not limited to:

  • Data Caching and Placement

  • Resource discovery

  • Routing and Searching Strategies

  • Query processing and optimization

  • Distributed Indexing

  • Semantic Mediation/Integration

  • Schema Mediation/Integration

  • Transaction Management

  • Database Consistency

  • Database Integrity

  • Self Organization in P2P systems

  • Performance and Robustness of P2P systems

  • Benchmarks for P2P System Evaluations

  • Trust and Reputation Management in P2P Systems

  • Database Architectures for P2P, and vise versa

  • Database Applications in P2P

  • Social Networking in P2P

  • Delay Tolerant P2P Systems

  • P2P Systems over MANET

Apologies for multiple postings
======================================================================

International Workshop on Privacy-Preserving Data Analysis (PPDA)
                 April 20, 2009, Brisbane, Australia
                  http://www.cse.ust.hk/~raywong/ppda

to be held in conjunction with DASFAA 2009
                 (http://www.itee.uq.edu.au/~dasfaa/)

                        CALL FOR PAPERS

======================================================================
With the advancement of information technology and declining hardware
price, organizations and companies are able to collect large amount of
personal data. Moreover, advanced data analysis and mining techniques
have been proposed to derived patterns hidden in data. However, the
increasing power in data processing and analysis also raises concerns
over the proper usage of personal information. It was found that a
sensitive medical record was uniquely linked to a named voter record
in a publicly available voter list through the shared attributes of
Zip, Birth date and Sex. It is not surprising that many organizations
are reluctant to disclose their data even when there may be great
potential gains from the data exploration. Therefore research in the
area of privacy preservation is deemed important for both theoretical
and practical reasons. PPDA 2009 will be held in conjunction with
DASFAA 2009 conference, and aims to bring together researchers in
different fields related to privacy preserving data analysis and to
provide a forum where researchers and practitioners can share and
exchange their knowledge and experience.

PPDA 2009 will be published in a combined volume of Lecturer Notes
in Computer Science series published by Springer.
We invite original research contributions on generic and
applied research on privacy. The PPDA 2009 topics of interest include
but are certainly not limited to the following areas:

- Privacy Preserving Data Publishing
- Background Knowledge Formulation
- Privacy-Aware Access Control
- Privacy in Outsourced Databases
- Privacy in Spatial Databases
- Cryptographic Tools
- Privacy Preservation over Social Networks
- Privacy Preservation over Graphs
- Sequential Releases
- Privacy over Data Streams
- Protocol-based Privacy Preserving Data Mining
- Case Studies on Privacy Leakage on Real Applications
- Efficient Algorithm for Privacy Preservation
- Generalization-based Algorithm
- Perturbation-based Algorithm
- Statistical Databases
- Privacy-preserving Data Integration
- Privacy Evaluation and Metrics
- Privacy Models
- Privacy in Web environment and Business Environment
- Learning for Privacy Breach
- Threats to Privacy
- Watermarking
