[Dbworld] Special Issue: "Advances in Medical Intelligent Decision Support Systems" - Final Deadline

CALL FOR PAPERS

Special Issue
Advances in Medical Intelligent Decision Support Systems
Intelligent Decision Technologies (IDT) journal seeks original manuscripts for a Special Issue on
Advances in Medical Decision Support Systems scheduled to appear in Vol. 3, No. 2, 2009.

The last few decades have witnessed significant advancements in intelligent computation techniques.
Driven by the need to solve complex real-world problems, powerful and sophisticated intelligent data
analysis technologies have been exploited or emerged, such as neural networks, support vector
machines, evolutionary algorithms, clustering methods, fuzzy logic, particle swarm optimization,
data mining, etc. In recent years, the volume of biological data has been increasing exponentially,
thus, allowing significant learning and experimentation to be carried out using a multidisciplinary
approach, which gives rise to many challenging problems. The foundation for any medical decision
support is the medical knowledge base which contains the necessary rules and facts. This knowledge needs
to be
acquired from information and data in the fields of interest, such as medicine. Clinical decision-making
is a challenging, multifaceted process. Its goals are precision in diagnosis and ins
titution of efficacious treatment. Achieving these objectives involves access to pertinent data and
application of previous knowledge to the analysis of new data in order to recognise patterns and
relations. As the volume and complexity of data have increased, use of digital computers to support data
analysis has become a necessity. In addition to computerisation of standard statistical analysis,
several other techniques for computer-aided data classification and reduction generally referred to
as intelligent systems, have evolved. This special issue will focus on illustrative and detailed
information about medical intelligent decision support systems and feature extraction/selection for
automated diagnostic systems.

The focus of this special issue is on advances in medical intelligent decision support systems including
determination of optimum classification schemes for the problem under study and also to infer clues
about the extracted features. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

[Dbworld] Special Track on Generating Vague Language from Large Databases (ENLG, Athens, Greece)

**********************************************************************
* Special Track on Generating Vague Language from Large Databases
* 12th European Workshop on Natural Language Generation
*                        Athens, Greece
**********************************************************************

Introduction

In recent years, there has been a growing demand for interfaces to,
and summarized presentation of, the information contained in large
databases. The idea of generating natural language reports from very
large databases (high level medical reports from real-time intensive
care unit data, or executive sales summaries from business databases,
etc.) and from over-specified inputs (graphs, spatial and
geographical images) has always been a viable alternative. However,
although there are generally agreed architectures for these systems,
there are still pressing questions on the characteristics of the
language to be generated for such reports. For instance, when working
on NLG systems in continuous domains such as the ones mentioned above,
vague expressions (e.g. a "moderate" increase, a "slight" fever, or a
"few" spikes in heart rate) and "gradability" issues such as the
success of a referring expression are more than likely to arise. This
special track of ENLG will tackle issues of vague language, relevance
and the use of referring expressions while generating language from
very large databases or from over-specified inputs.

We invite submissions that describe original, completed, unpublished
work on all aspects of the generation of vague language, with special
emphasis on algorithms based on empirical research.

[Dbworld] CfP KSM09: Knowledge Services & Mashups (Deadline extended)

=========================================================
WM2009 Workshop: Knowledge Services and Mashups (KSM09)
March 25, 2009 - March 27, 2009 Solothurn, Switzerland
URL: http://ksm09.mature-ip.eu

Part of the Conference on Professional Knowledge Management (WM 2009) http://km-conference2009.org/

Extended Deadline: November 14, 2008 Submission of workshop papers
December 15, 2008 Notification of authors about acceptance/rejection
January 10, 2009 Submission of camera-ready papers
=================================================

Large monolithic knowledge management systems as the one-for-all KM solution have largely failed to live
up to their expectations. In particular, they have failed

-	to integrate into work practices of the individual, thus lacking adoption by the individual
-	to adapt to different types and sizes of companies, different type of employees as well as changing
requirements of those
-	to acknowledge that knowledge management is not an isolated activity within a company, but rather an
activity of "networked individuals"

In line with the trend towards modular service-oriented architectures, we can observe that knowledge
management solutions increasingly adopt more modular approaches. However, these developments are
usually merely a decomposition into software components without taking into account the user of such
systems. But the notion of service goes beyond components; it usually assumes that the granularity of
functionality as well as packaging is motivated by usage patterns (e.g., business processes) and not
purely technical (software engineering) considerations.

This means that the shift from integrated knowledge management solutions towards knowledge services is
not only a question of modularity, but also requires rethinking offer and demand (by knowledge workers)

Second International Workshop on

Data and Services Management in Mobile Environments (DS2ME'09)

in conjunction with the

25th International Conference on Data Engineering (ICDE'09)

March 29 - April 4, 2009, Shangai, China

http://www.univ-valenciennes.fr/congres/ds2me09/

GENERAL INFORMATION

-------------------

Wireless and portable devices are enabling pervasive access to

information and services. This has led to the development of numerous

original services and systems in various application fields such as

e-Commerce, e-Learning or transport systems. e-Services deployed in

pervasive environments are supported by constrained resources in terms

of autonomy, network bandwidth or storage capacity, mobility of devices

(laptops, PDA, smartphones, sensors, etc.). These physical constraints

have highly impacted traditional data and services management

techniques. Therefore, these techniques are evolving and leading to new

data and services management systems that consider variable user

capabilities and context characteristics. The next generation of systems

in pervasive environments will have to integrate data collected at

different levels (in the cache, in the neighborhood or received from

remote data servers). In addition, they will have to be adaptive,

scalable, robust and efficient for developing numerous original services

and systems.
