The field of computer science is evolving to incorporate intrinsically complex social, organizational,
and political environments in which computers are situated. Nowhere is this more apparent, and the
influence of data mining professionals more critical, than in the often debated arenas of privacy,
security, and trust. There is an ever-increasing demand for the incorporation of new technologies to
gather data on people for a variety of worthwhile endeavors. Data mining methodologies provide an
excellent framework to assist data holders, such as security and surveillance officials, to sort
through the data deluge and discover useful nuggets of intelligence. At the same time, the application of

[Dbworld] CFP: Special Issue on Intelligent and Adaptive Web-based Educational Systems

[Apologies for cross-postings! Please forward this e-mail to people who might be interested in this
special issue.]

********************* CALL FOR PAPERS *********************

SUBMISSION DUE DATE: July 1, 2008

SPECIAL ISSUE ON INTELLIGENT AND ADAPTIVE WEB-BASED EDUCATIONAL SYSTEMS,
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF WEB-BASED LEARNING AND TEACHING TECHNOLOGIES

Guest Editors: Fuhua Lin, Sabine Graf, Kinshuk, Rory McGreal

INTRODUCTION:
Providing learners with an environment that reacts intelligently to the usersÂ’ needs and incorporates
their individual characteristics for presenting suitable information and learning material helps to
support learners and makes learning easier for them. Such systems can incorporate, for example, the
prior knowledge, preferences, learning goals, learning styles, and cognitive abilities of learners.

Web-based educational systems based on learning management systems (LMS) such as WebCT, Blackboard, and
Moodle are commonly and successfully used in distance learning. They provide a variety of features to
support teachers and course developers to create and manage their online courses. However, at current
stage, such environments provide very little, or in most cases, neither intelligent support nor
adaptivity at all.

This special issue aims to focus on how intelligent support and adaptive features can be integrated in
currently used systems as well as on how intelligent and adaptive Web-based educational systems can be
improved in order to provide a better learning environment for learners.

The need arise for smart learning environments that offer personal services in the whole cycle of
education, from counselling, to academic advising, to program planning, to collaborative learning, to

Final Call: Special Issue on Agricultural Metadata & Semantics
International Journal of Metadata, Semantics and Ontologies
***********************************************************

OVERVIEW

A common vision that may serve as an enabler for sustainable development,
environmental preservation, and fighting hunger in the world, is the
involvement, collaboration and coordination of activities dealing with
the production, organisation and exchange of agricultural knowledge.
Numerous technical and subject experts are working on related topics,
tackling with issues such as classifications & taxonomies, controlled
vocabularies, thesauri, authority files, glossaries, metadata
specifications and their application profiles, as well as
ontology-driven applications.

The general aim of this special issue is to assess the current status
and technologies, as well as to outline the major challenges and future
perspectives, related to agricultural knowledge production, organization,
and exchange from a Semantic Web perspective. It aims to provide an
overview of the state of the art in this field, by including a wide
range of interdisciplinary contributions. Overall, it aims to outline
the rich potential of the agricultural knowledge domain as an
application field for advanced metadata- and semantic-driven systems
and services.

                              (PersDB 2008)

in conj. with VLDBÂ’08, 24-30 August 2008, Auckland, New Zealand
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
          Submission deadline: June 01, 2008
          Workshop date: August 23, 2008

============================================================================

AIM AND SCOPE
--------------

Proliferation of database-driven web sites has brought upon a plethora of applications
where different notions of user and context information are of paramount importance.
Monitoring and trading stock portfolios, blog aggregation and news notification, dataset
sharing, weather tracking, and even simple search are just a few examples of applications
that can all be personalized based on usersÂ’ individual or social profiles and can be
affected by their operational context, which may include the location, time, and other
features of their environment. The trend towards more user-centric, personalized,
and context-aware database systems requires new models and techniques able to provide users
with the 'right information' at the 'right time' in the 'right place'
and may affect database system functionality at several levels: designing the user interface,
