[Dbworld] Major Update of LETOR, a Benchmark Dataset for Learning to Rank

Subject: Major Update of LETOR, a Benchmark Dataset for Learning to Rank

Author: Tie-Yan Liu (tyliu@...).

Body:

Microsoft Research Asia released a benchmark dataset for research on learning to rank, named LETOR, in
March 2007. This dataset contains standard features, relevance judgments, data partitioning,
evaluation tools, and several baselines, for the OHSUMED data collection and the '.gov' data
collection. The detailed information about LETOR can be found at
http://research.microsoft.com/users/tyliu/LETOR/.

In the past year, LETOR has been used in many research papers on learning to rank. At the same time, we have
received valuable feedback from many people, including bug reports, feasibility studies of the tools,
and other suggestions. Based on the feedback, we have made a major update to the LETOR dataset as described below.
1) Bugs fixed in the baseline experimental results and the evaluation tools.
2) More baseline experimental results provided, including ListNet (ICML 2007), AdaRank (SIGIR 2007),
FRank (SIGIR 2007) and MHR (SIGIR 2007).
3) Evaluation tools updated, including a tool which receives ranked list directly instead of ranking
scores as input, and a significant test tool.
3) A channel opened for accepting new baselines from other researchers.
4) A discussion board created for researchers to exchange their ideas on learning to rank and the LETOR dataset.
5) More information collected about active research groups, papers and other resources on learning to rank.

Accompanying the new update, we have created a new website for LETOR, and made it online on the first day of
2008. You can visit the new website by following this hyperlink,
http://research.microsoft.com/users/LETOR/, or find the way of transiting to it at the previous
website of LETOR.

In this New Year's Day, we would like to express our sincere thanks to you, for your helps and suggestions on

*About the Conference*
======================

The CSE (International Conference on Computational Science and Engineering)
conference previously was held mainly as the International Workshop on High
Performance Scientific and Engineering Computing for tenth editions, mostly
in conjunction with International Conference on Parallel Processing (ICPP),
as COATA-98 (Orlando, USA, July, 1998), HPSEC-99 (Fukushima, Japan,
September 1999), HPSEC-00 (Toronto, Canada, August, 2000), HPSEC-01
(Valencia, Spain, September, 2001), HPSEC-02 (Vancouver, Canada, August,
2002), HPSEC-03 (Kaohsing, Taiwan, October, 2003), HPSEC-04 (Montreal,
Canada, August, 2004),
HPCSE-04 with WCC-04 (Toulouse, France, August, 2004), HPSEC-05 (Oslo,
Norway, June, 2005), and HPSEC-06 (Columbus, USA, August, 2006).

After many successful editions, this conference will be organized
independently starting in 2008, in Sao Paulo, Brazil. This Conference is
sponsored by IEEE TCSC Technical Committee on Scalable Computing and IEEE
Computer Society.

*About Sao Paulo, Brazil*
=========================

Sao Paulo, the 19a richest city of the world, is officially inserted in a
larger metropolitan region which holds 39 towns in total, and a population
of more than
19 million inhabitants (2005). It is one of the biggest financial centers
of Brazil and the world. Its economy is going through a deep transformation.
Once a city with a strong industrial character, Sao Paulo's economy has
become increasingly based on the tertiary sector, focusing on services and
businesses for the country.

Sao Paulo is located on a plateau, part of the vast region known as the
Brazilian Highlands, with an average elevation of around 800 metres (2,625
ft) above sea level - though at a distance of only about 70 kilometers (43
mi) from the Atlantic Ocean. This distance is covered by two highways, the
Anchieta and the Imigrantes, that roll down the range, leading to the
portuary city of Santos and the beach resort of Guaruja. Rolling terrain
prevails within the urbanized areas of Sao Paulo but in the North of the
city - where the Serra da Cantareira Range boasts higher elevations and a
sizable remnant of the Atlantic Rain Forest.

Title
-----
Post-Mining of Association Rules: Techniques for Effective
Knowledge Extraction

Editors
-------
Dr. Yanchang Zhao
Prof. Chengqi Zhang
Dr. Longbing Cao

Publisher
---------
IGI Global (formerly Idea Group)

Introduction
------------
There are often a huge number of association rules
discovered in a data mining practice, making it difficult
for users to identify those that are of particular interest
to them. Therefore, it is important to remove insignificant
rules and prune redundancy as well as summarize, visualize
and post-mine the discovered rules. Moreover, the
information we can get from traditional association rules
is very limited, so new forms of association rules are
needed to discover useful and actionable knowledge. The
book aims to present a whole picture of the post-analysis,
summarization and new forms of association rules and
introduce the up-to-date research on the above topics to
extract useful knowledge from a large number of discovered
association rules.

The Overall Objective of the Book
---------------------------------
The book will focus on the post-analysis of association
rules to extract useful and actionable knowledge from a
large number of discovered rules. It will cover interest,
redundancy, post-mining, summarization, presentation and
visualization of association rules, as well as novel forms
and new trends of association rules. It will not only
present academia with a systematic view of the current
research progress on the above topics, but it will also
help industry learn from the ideas and apply them to find
actionable knowledge in real-world applications.

The Target Audience
-------------------
The audience of this book will be researchers in the field
of data mining, postgraduate students who are interested
in data mining, and industry data miners. Note that the
audience is not limited to those interested in association
rules because the post-mining of association rules involves
clustering, classification and many other techniques of
data mining, as well as statistics and artificial
intelligence, which are actually beyond association rule
mining itself.

Recommended topics include, but not limited to:
-----------------------------------------------
* Subjective & objective interestingness
* Removing redundancy in association rules
* Summarization and generalization of association rules
* Presentation and visualization of association rules
* Maintenance of association rules
* Post-mining of association rules, e.g., clustering
  association rules
* Class association rules and association classifier
* Quantitative association rules and inter-transaction
  association rules
* New forms/challenges/trends of association rules and
  association mining

[Dbworld] Call for papers -- WaGe2008

Call for Papers - WaGe08 (http://www.swinflow.org/confs/WaGe08/WaGe08.htm).

Deadline: January 15, 2008.

Grid environments enable collaborations between large-scale resources to support complex scientific
and business applications, such as climate modeling, structural biology and chemistry, medical
surgery, disaster recovery, international stock market modeling. Such complex applications often
require the creation of a collaborative workflow management system as part of their sophisticated
problem solving processes so that e-scientists and business people who lack the low-level expertise can
still utilize the current generation of grid toolkits, such as GT4, Gridbus, SwinGrid, Grid’5000 or
other toolkits. As a result, the research and development of workflow management in grid environments
become a must and have evoked a high degree of interest internationally.

The 3rd WaGe workshop in 2008 continues to provide a forum for researchers, practitioners and developers
from the areas of grid, cluster computing, cooperative computing and workflow research to exchange the
latest experience and research ideas on workflow support in grid environments. Besides, another
important focus of this workshop in 2008 is to explore new workflow management techniques in pervasive
computing environments with GPC 2008.

· Real-world scientific and business applications of grid workflow

Submission Requirements

Please email your manuscripts in PDF to jchen@... with the email
subject as “WaGe08 paper submission”. Papers should be limited up to 8 pages in IEEE format. All papers
will be peer reviewed by two or three pc members. Submitting a paper to the workshop means that if the paper
is accepted, at least one author should register to GPC2008 and attend the workshop to present the paper.
For no-show authors, their papers will be removed from the digital library after the conference and their
affiliations will receive a notification.

Publication of Papers

All accepted papers will appear in the GPC 2008 proceedings published by IEEE Computer Society (EI
Indexed). Selected papers will be invited to a special issue in Concurrency and Computation: Practice
and Experience or Journal of Computer and System Sciences.
