[Dbworld] Last Call for Workshops - ER08

CALL FOR WORKSHOPS

27th International Conference on Conceptual Modeling (ER2008)

October 20-23, 2008, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain

Conference Web Site: http://www.upc.edu/ER2008/

=============================================================

The International Conference on Conceptual Modeling is a leading
international forum for presenting and discussing current research and
applications in which the major emphasis is on conceptual modeling.
Topics of interest span the entire spectrum of conceptual modeling
including research and practice in areas such as theories of concepts
and ontologies underlying conceptual modeling, methods and tools for
developing and communicating conceptual models, and techniques for
transforming conceptual models into effective implementations.

ER 2008 will host a number of workshops addressing different areas
related to conceptual modeling that complement the main ER 2008
conference. Workshops are intended to serve as an intensive
collaborative forum for exchanging late breaking ideas and theories in
an evolutionary stage. We encourage prospective workshop organizers to
submit proposals for highly-interactive workshops focusing on either in-
depth analysis or broad-ranging approaches to areas related to
conceptual modeling.

OVERVIEW

A common vision that may serve as an enabler for sustainable development,
environmental preservation, and fighting hunger in the world, is the
involvement, collaboration and coordination of activities dealing with
the production, organisation and exchange of agricultural knowledge.
Numerous technical and subject experts are working on related topics,
tackling with issues such as classifications & taxonomies, controlled
vocabularies, thesauri, authority files, glossaries, metadata
specifications and their application profiles, as well as
ontology-driven applications.

The general aim of this special issue is to assess the current status
and technologies, as well as to outline the major challenges and future
perspectives, related to agricultural knowledge production, organization,
and exchange from a Semantic Web perspective. It aims to provide an
overview of the state of the art in this field, by including a wide
range of interdisciplinary contributions. Overall, it aims to outline
the rich potential of the agricultural knowledge domain as an
application field for advanced metadata- and semantic-driven systems
and services.

[Dbworld] Call for Papers: 2nd IEEE International Conference on Semantic Computing

CALL FOR PAPERS

Second IEEE International Conference on Semantic Computing
IEEE ICSC2008
August 4th-7th, 2008, Santa Clara, CA, USA
http://icsc.eecs.uci.edu/

Sponsored by IEEE Computer Society

The field of Semantic Computing (SC) brings together those disci-
plines concerned with connecting the (often vaguely-formulated)
intentions of humans with computational content. This connection
can go both ways: retrieving, using and manipulating existing
content according to user's goals ("do what the user means"); and
creating, rearranging, and managing content that matches the au-
thor's intentions ("do what the author means").

The content addressed in SC includes, but is not limited to,
structured and semi-structured data, multimedia data, text, pro-
grams, services and, even, network behavior. This connection be-
tween content and the user is made via (1) Semantic Analysis,
which analyzes content with the goal of converting it to meaning
(semantics); (2) Semantic Integration, which integrates content
and semantics from multiple sources; (3) Semantic Applications,
which utilize content and semantics to solve problems; and (4)
Semantic Interfaces, which attempt to interpret users' intentions
expressed in natural language or other communicative forms.

Example areas of SC include (but, again, are not limited to) the
following:

ANALYSIS AND UNDERSTANDING OF CONTENT
 Natural-language processing
 Image and video analysis
 Audio and speech analysis
Analysis of structured and semi-structured data
Analysis of behavior of software, services, and networks

INTEGRATION OF MULTIPLE SEMANTIC REPRESENTATIONS
 Database schema integration
 Ontology integration
 Interoperability and Service Integration

SEMANTIC INTERFACES
 Natural-Language Interface
 Multimodal Interfaces

APPLICATIONS
Semantic Web and other search technologies
 Question answering
 Semantic Web services
 Multimedia databases
Engineering of software, services, and networks based on
   natural-language specifications

The second IEEE International Conference on Semantic Computing
(ICSC2008) builds on the success of ICSC2007 as an international
interdisciplinary forum for researchers and practitioners to
present research that advances the state of the art and practice
of Semantic Computing, as well as identifying the emerging re-
search topics and defining the future of Semantic Computing. The
conference particularly welcomes interdisciplinary research that
facilitates the ultimate success of Semantic Computing.

The event is located in Santa Clara, California, the heart of
Silicon Valley. The technical program of ICSC2008 includes tuto-
rials, workshops, invited talks, paper presentations, panel dis-
cussions, demo sessions, and an industry track. Submissions of
high-quality papers describing mature results or on-going work
are invited.

In addition to Technical Papers, the conference will feature
    * Tutorials,
    * Workshops,
    * Demo Sessions,
    * Special Sessions,
    * Panels,
    * and an Industry Track.

Please refer to the conference website for further information:

SUBMISSIONS
Authors are invited to submit an 8-page technical paper manuscript
in double-column IEEE format following the guidelines available on the
ICSC2008 web page under "submissions".

The Conference Proceedings will be published by the IEEE Computer
Society Press. Distinguished quality papers presented at the con-
ference will be selected for publications in internationally renowned
journals.

There will be a Best Paper Award and a Best Student Paper Award for
the best submitted paper and the best submitted student paper. The
award winners will be announced at the conference banquet.

[Dbworld] Book Announcement: Introduction to Statistical Relational Learning

Introduction to Statistical Relational Learning
Edited by Lise Getoor and Ben Taskar
ISBN-10: 0-262-07288-2
Published by The MIT Press, 601 pages
http://www.cs.umd.edu/srl-book/

Handling inherent uncertainty and exploiting compositional structure are
fundamental to understanding and designing large-scale systems.
Statistical relational learning builds on ideas from probability theory
and statistics to address uncertainty while incorporating tools from
logic, databases, and programming languages to represent structure. In
Introduction to Statistical Relational Learning, leading researchers in
this emerging area of machine learning describe current formalisms,
models, and algorithms that enable effective and robust reasoning about
richly structured systems and data.

The early chapters provide tutorials for material used in later
chapters, offering introductions to representation, inference and
learning in graphical models, and logic. The book then describes
object-oriented approaches, including probabilistic relational models,
relational Markov networks, and probabilistic entity-relationship models
as well as logic-based formalisms including Bayesian logic programs,
Markov logic, and stochastic logic programs. Later chapters discuss such
topics as probabilistic models with unknown objects, relational
dependency networks, reinforcement learning in relational domains, and
information extraction.

By presenting a variety of approaches, the book highlights commonalities
and clarifies important differences among proposed approaches and, along
the way, identifies important representational and algorithmic issues.
Numerous applications are provided throughout.
