[Dbworld] KDD Cup 2008 Call for Proposals

KDD Cup 2008: Call for Proposals

KDD Cup is the oldest data mining competition. It is an integral part of the annual ACM SIGKDD International
Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (KDD).

Information about past KDD Cups can be found at http://www.acm.org/sigs/sigkdd/kddcup/index.php or http://www.acm.org/sigs/sigkdd/kddcup/index.php.

With this call, we invite proposals for KDD Cup 2008. In your proposal, please provide the following information:

1. Description of the data set (e.g., availability, size, etc) and its
application domain.
2. Description of the competition tasks. A KDD cup competition usually
consists of 2-3 tasks and each participating team can choose to compete in one or more tasks. Please give a
description of each proposed task and its practical significance.
3. Evaluation measures.
4. Various deadlines. Usually the competition starts in March and ends
in late June or early July. The winners will be announced at the KDD-2008 conference.
5. Names, affiliations, postal addresses, phone numbers, and short bios
of the organizers.
6. Whether the competition is new or has been held before.

An ideal competition task is one that is practically useful, can be done without extensive application
domain knowledge, and can be evaluated objectively. Of particular interests are non-traditional tasks
that may need novel solutions.

Please send your proposals to pcchairs@... by Nov 10, 2007
(notice the email address change and the deadline change). If you plan to submit, please send us an email to
alert us as soon as possible.

[Dbworld] CFP: Workshop on Health Data Management

International Workshop on Health Data Management (IWHDM¡¯08)
in conjunction with
The 10th Asia Pacific Web Conference (APweb)
April 28 2008, Shenyang, China

Information collected during the treatment of disease is an under-utilised resource in medical and
health service research. The management of this data for the purpose of health research is a fundamental
question which is only now attracting greater interest. This management needs to start at the point of
collection and the gathering of patient consent if required, through the integration of the data from
multiple information systems, fathering of information from related data sets, to the analysis of the
combined data. If done properly, this process has the ability to lead to improvement to the quality of
patient care, prevention of medical errors, and reduction of healthcare costs. There is much to be
achieved to realise this goal, both in terms of theoretical information management research and the
development of practical and useful applications and the collaborations of researchers across both
these areas.

Organized in conjunction with the 10th Asia Pacific Web Conference (APweb 2008), the purpose of
IWHDM¡¯08 is to provide a forum for discussion and interaction among researchers with interests in the
cutting edge issues of information technology techniques in health.

TOPICS:

Papers are welcome from topics related to various data- and knowledge-based approaches in health
domains.? Research topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

- Health information technology
- Medical image processing and mining
- Text mining in health
- Health data warehouses/OLAP
- Clinical decision support

[Dbworld] PhD opening in geo databases

- - - Call for PhD students - - -
- - - in geo databases - - -

The Smart Systems graduate program in Computer Science is seeking excellent graduate students
interested in pursuing a PhD in Computer Science in the area of geo informatics, specifically: geo raster databases.

Focus is on advanced Web services for high-volume multi-dimensional raster data, such as satellite
images, seafloor geophysics data, and climate models. The database group within the Smart Systems
program has a strong worldwide reputation in array databases. Its operational array DBMS, rasdaman,
acts as research vehicle.

PhD research will be performed based on the manifold synergetic collaborations with the visualization
and Geo/Ocean groups at Jacobs University (www.irccm.org), the World Data Center MARE
(www.wdc-mare.org), the Alfred-Wegener-Institut Bremerhaven (www.awi.org), and international
cooperations. Further, PhD research is expected to embed into the database group's active involvement
(including chairing of working groups) in the OpenGeospatial Consortium (OGC;
www.opengeospatial.org) which develops standards for interoperable geo services.

Students will be funded for three years, in which they are expected to complete their PhD. Additional
funding - e.g., for conference trips - is available for students who achieve and maintain excellent performance.

Requirements:
A strong background in computer science, willingness to work hard, and interest in research are all
must-haves. A solid knowledge in GIS (or remote sensing) and Web/databases (including programming
experience) is also essential. Strong GRE scores and (if English is not a native language) good TOEFL
scores are not essential, but a plus.

Interested candidates should contact Peter BAUMANN
(p.baumann@...). Please send your CV, a brief
statement of purpose, and at least one reference.

**************************************************************************************

The significant advances in wireless communications, the ever increasing availability of
mobile multi-purpose devices, and the fast growth in sensors and actuators have created
a global computing infrastructure that is profoundly changing the way people live and
work. People interact with themselves, the physical world, and information services
using a wide range of devices connected together via a variety of networks, enabling
computing and communication at an unprecedented scale and density.

This new infrastructure presents a number of challenges especially when it comes to
data-intensive applications: enormous scale, varying and intermittent connectivity,
location dependence and context awareness, limited bandwidth and power capacity, small
device size, and multimedia delivery across hybrid networks.

Conventional issues in data management have to be considered and evaluated anew in this
rapidly changing environment. Non-traditional issues including mobility, data semantics,
context modeling, broadcast and multicast delivery, data availability, trust and privacy
must also be addressed effectively.

The latest of a successful series, MDM 2008 provides a high-quality forum for the
presentation of research results on data management issues in the evolving world of

[Dbworld] CFP - AASNET 2008

The First International Workshop on Applications of Ad hoc and Sensor
Networks (AASNET '08) is held in conjunction with AINA 2008 22nd IEEE
International Conference on Advanced Information Networking and Applications

http://www.ccse.kfupm.edu.sa/~tarek/AASNET.htm

Wireless mobile ad hoc and sensor network nodes have limited battery
capacity. Hence, they tend to be energy conservative. Many MAC, routing
protocols, scheduling scheme were proposed to promote energy conservation
without degrading the performance of the network. Nonetheless, nowadays,
many real-time applications have been proposed and developed using ad hoc
and sensor networks.
The aim of this workshop is to provide a forum for academic and industry
professionals to discuss recent progress and challenges in the area of real
time applications in ad hoc and sensor networks. We encourage contributions
that describe innovative work and results on AASNET. The topics of interest
include but are not limited to:

• Energy-aware routing protocols
• Energy-aware scheduling techniques
• Energy-aware MAC protocols
• Artificial intelligence applications in ad hoc and sensor networks
• Sensor networks for oil and gas industry
• Mobility tracking schemes in ad hoc networks
• Voice over ad hoc networks
• Multimedia over sensor networks
• Machine leaning schemes for ad hoc and sensor networks
• Intrusion detection systems in ad hoc and sensor networks
• Telehealth monitoring system using ad hoc and sensor networks

have created an exciting new ubiquitous computing paradigm that
facilitates computing and communication services all the time, everywhere.
This emerging paradigm is changing the way we live and work today.
Via a ubiquitous infrastructure consisting of a variety of global and
localized networks, users, sensors, devices, systems and applications
may seamlessly interact with each other and even the physical world in
unprecedented ways. To realize this continually evolving ubiquitous
computing paradigm, trustworthy computing that delivers secure, private,
and reliable computing and communication services plays an essential
role.

The IEEE International Conference on Sensor Networks, Ubiquitous, and
