-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We invite you to participate in the 4th International Workshop on Data Management
for Sensor Networks (DMSN'07). This workshop is the fourth in a series of successful
workshops that aim to bring together researchers working on all aspects of sensor
data management: from data processing in networks of remote, wireless, resource-
constrained sensors to managing heterogeneous, noisy, and sometimes sensitive sensor
data in databases. The resource-constrained, lossy, noisy, distributed, and remote
nature of sensor networks means that traditional database techniques often cannot
be applied without significant re-tooling. Challenges associated with acquiring and
processing large-scale, heterogeneous sets of live sensor data also call for novel
data management techniques. Finally, in many applications, collecting sensor data
raises important privacy and security concerns that require new protection and
anonymization techniques.

DMSN'07 is colocated with VLDB 2007 and is sponsored by Intel Corporation.

[Dbworld] Fifth International Workshop on SOA and Web Services - Best Practices

Call for Paper: Fifth International Workshop on SOA & Web Services - Best
Practices @ Oopsla 2007

Montreal Canada, Oct 21, 2007

Workshop Website: http://boss.bekk.no/oopsla2007/
Conference website: http://www.oopsla.org/oopsla2007/

The workshop's main theme and goals:
====================================
The W3C defines Web services as software systems designed to support
interoperable machine-to-machine interactions over a communications network.
Many of today's Web services are basic APIs that can be accessed over a network
such as the Internet, and executed on a remote system hosting the requested
services. However, Web services can also be used to implement an architecture
adhering to the principles of Service-oriented architecture (SOA).

In SOA, the basic unit of communication is the exchange of message documents,
rather than the invocation of an operation in a remote object. SOA principles
include modularity, layering, loose coupling, and service virtualization;
important SOA patterns are Enterprise Service Bus (ESB), service composition
(process choreography), and service registry.

SOA and Web services are supported by nearly all major software vendors and
industry analysts. However, there are many challenges in the area of engineering
SOA. In this 5th International Workshop on SOA and Web services, we will explore
best-practices in the adoption, design, implementation, management and
monitoring of SOA- and Web services-related methods, tools and technologies. The
workshop brings industry and academia together to publish a compendium of best
practices.

[Dbworld] Call for Paper: ICDM Workshop on Stream Mining and Management (DSMM'07)

DSMM'07 Call for Papers

* Introduction

Recently, applications that require analysis, storage and retrieval of streaming data become of special
significance to both the data mining and data base community.

Advances in both hardware and software technologies coupled with high-speed, distributed and pervasive
data generation have led to the area of data streams. Streaming data is ubiquitous and there is a real need
to store, query and analyze such rapid and large volumes of data. Examples of data streams include (but are
not limited to): data generated from wireless sensor networks, web logs and clickstreams, ATM
transactions, search engines, phone call records, stock trades, traffic data, fabrication, weather
forecasting, and telescope images. Due to their assumptions, traditional data mining and data storage
technologies are infeasible for analyzing streaming data. Owing to the importance of applications of
this area, mining and managing data streams has attracted great attention over the la
 st few years.

Many applications deal with data of changing characteristics. For instance, managing objects that move
in space has applications in traffic control, law enforcement, homeland security, urban planning, etc.
As another example, one distinguishing trait setting data streams apart from disk-stored data is that
streaming data usually exhibits time-changing data characteristics. As most decision making tasks
rely on the up-to-dateness of their supporting data, the evolving nature of the data creates tremendous
complexity for many mining algorithms. On the other hand, users are often interested in changes embodied
by the data. Thus, how to make mining algorithms more effective and efficient in view of changing data
characteristics has become a major challenge in a wide range of application domain
 s. These include applications in network monitoring, biosurveillance, Web data mining, clustering and
classification of data of changing distributions, etc.

This workshop aims at gathering data mining and data base researchers to demonstrate their recent
research results in the area. Papers that address mining and managing streaming data techniques,
systems and applications are welcome. We also encourage position and on-going research papers.

[Dbworld] Call for papers PIKM 2007, Aug 5 deadline approaching

1st ACM International Workshop for Ph.D. Students in Information and Knowledge Management

 Lisboa, Portugal, November 9, 2007

 http://www.cs.sfu.ca/~jpei/PIKMworkshopCFP.htm

The goal of the PIKM workshop is to encourage graduate students to present their dissertation research at a
relatively early stage. The targeted students are those with a focus in any of the CIKM research tracks,
i.e., databases, information retrieval or knowledge management. Interdisciplinary work across the
three tracks is particularly encouraged.

It is noticed that a broad range of topics are addressed in CIKM related to various issues in databases and
information systems, information retrieval and semantic web, knowledge management and data mining.
The CIKM conference with its confluence several research tracks provides an excellent opportunity for
learning about the latest developments in the respective fields. It provides a good forum for graduate
students to expose their research at an early stage. Particularly, such a workshop encourages
interdisciplinary studies across the three major fields addressed by CIKM: databases, information
retrieval and knowledge management.

This workshop will enable graduate students to present their dissertation proposals and/or ongoing
research on their dissertation sub-problems. It will give them an opportunity to get feedback on their
early work from researchers worldwide. The reviewers’ comments will help them assess and possibly
revise their work. Selected papers will be published in the workshop proceedings and the respective
authors will give a talk on their dissertation at the workshop. This will give considerable recognition
to the work of the students.

A wide range of topics on any area in databases, information retrieval and knowledge management can be
presented at the PIKM workshop. The areas of interest are similar to those at the CIKM main conference and
can be found on the CIKM 2007 website.

SUBMISSION DETAILS

The main idea of this workshop is to present Ph.D. proposals addressing all parts of the dissertation. The
authors could be Ph.D. students or Masters students aspiring to get a Ph.D. having in mind a clear idea of a
proposal. Students could also submit work on one or more sub-problems of their dissertation. The papers
should address the research issues in their proposal focusing on the challenges in solving them. They
could also include the proposed techniques to solve the given problems. Preliminary experimental
evaluation may also be included if necessary. However it should be clear that the work is ongoing.

Papers should be maximum 8 pages in length in ACM CIKM format. The graduate student should be the first
author on the paper. The student’s research advisor, committee members and others may be co-authors.
Please note that at least one author of each accepted paper is required to register for the PIKM workshop in
