Senior Faculty Position in Media Computing/Engineering

The Arts, Media and Engineering Program (AME) (http://ame.asu.edu) at the Fulton School of Engineering
and the Herberger College of the Arts at Arizona State University is announcing a leadership-level,
tenured, senior faculty opening in Media Computing and Engineering.

AME is a nationally leading program for transdisciplinary research and education in media. The program
has established digital media concentrations in the PhD and Masters degrees of ten different
disciplines: Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Informatics, Bioengineering,
Psychology, Education, Design, Dance, Music, Theater and Film, Visual Arts. The program also offers a
PhD in Media Arts and Sciences. Ten AME faculty and thirty affiliated faculty from the participating
departments work collaboratively with graduate students supported by research assistantships for the
creation of innovative experiential media systems, models and applications. Core research areas
include: multimodal sensing, perception and modeling, interaction and feedback, experiential
composition and knowledge creation. AME research results in applications of societal significance in
the areas of health, communication, education and creativity. The program has diverse external support stream!
 s: federal (NSF, NEA, NEH, NIH – they include prestigious IGERT and CISE RI grants), Foundation
(Kauffman), and industry (Microsoft, IBM, Deutsche Telecom. Avaya, NRC). AME is a well-supported,
strategic initiative of ASU and is a key part of the highly innovative New American University concept

[Dbworld] Semantic Web Challenge CFP (ISWC 2007 + ASWC 2007)

===============================================================
Call for Participation

  ***** The Fifth Semantic Web Challenge *****

  at the 6th International Semantic Web Conference ISWC 2007,
  and the 2nd Asian Semantic Web Conference ASWC 2007

  November 11-15th 2007
  Busan, South Korea
  http://iswc2007.semanticweb.org
===============================================================

We invite submissions to the fifth annual Semantic Web Challenge, the premiere event for demonstrating
practical progress towards achieving the vision of the Semantic Web.

The central idea of the Semantic Web is to extend the current human-readable web by encoding some of the
semantics of resources in a machine-processable form. Moving beyond syntax opens the door to more
advanced applications and functionality on the Web. Computers will be better able to search, process,
integrate and present the content of these resources in a meaningful, intelligent manner. The core
technological building blocks are now in place and widely available: ontology languages, flexible
storage and querying facilities, protocols, reasoning engines, etc. Guidelines for best practice are
being formulated and disseminated by the W3C.

The next challenge is to show off the benefits of semantic technologies by developing integrated, easy to
use applications that can provide new levels of Web functionality for end users on the Web or within
enterprise settings. Applications submitted should demonstrate clear practical value that goes above
and beyond what is possible with conventional web technologies alone.

In the past years, the Semantic Web Challenge has grown into one of the most exciting and inspiring events of

[Dbworld] CFP: Workshop on Educating The Web-Generation (Edu4WebGen 2007) [July 10]

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
                          Call for Papers:
International Workshop on "Educating The Web-Generation" (EWG'07)
                      at IEEE/WIC/ACM WI-IAT 2007
                 November 2-5, 2007 - Silicon Valley, USA
                 http://www.effactory.com/Edu4WebGen/
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

++++++++++++
Description
++++++++++++
While talking about Web Intelligence we cannot leave those behind using the web
and “its intelligence”: the Web-Generation. This workshop focuses on the fundamental
(computational) education of future generations whose lives will more and more be
influenced by an enormous potential for technology and furthermore by a hard
competition in a global world. During the next years of not only computing we have
to find an answer to the question how to provide our schoolchildren, students, and
workforces with the necessary educational opportunities to succeed in a digital
economy influenced by a hard competition in a global word. How will they adopt and
evaluate new technologies?

Knowledge itself is growing tremendously and the web with its informational overflow
– not yet prepared to be a fully interactive, context- and user-sensitive tool
supporting people in their daily routines – has already transformed every aspect of
our lives. Is the next generation already able to deal with those technological
possibilities? Has it the language and analytical skills to be more than Nintendo-Kids?
During the last years, the literacy of 15-year-old students was tested by the PISA-test
of the OECD member states and not only the U.S. was shocked at the outcome.

  International Workshop on Collective Intelligence on Semantic Web (CISW 2007)

               IEEE/WIC/ACM Joint International Conference on
        Web Intelligence and Intelligent Agent Technology (WI-IAT'07)
                   Silicon Vally, USA, November 2-5, 2007
                      http://intelligent.pe.kr/CISW07/
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

+++++++++++++++++++++
Scope of the Workshop
+++++++++++++++++++++
Semantic web environment has been evolving. Especially, collective intelligence is a key issue to
collaboratively share knowledge and even generate new knowledge. Many Web 2.0 platforms (e.g., blogs
and wikis) have been developed to exchange meaningful information and support user-centered tasks on a
variety of domains (e.g., e-learning, e-commerce, and e-government). Local knowledge should be
annotated into a large amount of contents including not only simple documents but also multimedia data.
For example, collaborative tagging (e.g., del.icio.us) can play an important role of knowledge (or
information) sharing between peoples on social networks.

The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners in areas of knowledge and
intelligence, semantics, and grid computing to share their visions, research achievements and
solutions to real applications, to resolve the challenge issues and to establish worldwide cooperative
research and development.

Topics of interests

- Ontology mapping and merging
- Context and ontologies

[Dbworld] CFP: Workshop on Cyberinfrastucture for e-Science (CyIneS 2007)

===============================================================================
                          Call for Papers
   The First International Workshop on Cyberinfrastructure for e-Science
                           (CyIneS 2007)
             in conjunction with IEEE/WIC/ACM WI/IAT'07

           http://www.cild.iastate.edu/events/CyIneS2007/
===============================================================================

--------------------
Workshop Description
--------------------
Recent advances in biological, physical, and social sciences and engineering are increasingly being
driven by our ability to discover, share, integrate and analyze disparate types of data. Advances in
computing and communications (e.g., data grids and compute grids, sensor networks), community-driven
efforts to annotate data sources and resources with metadata (ontologies), and statistically based
machine learning algorithms for constructing predictive models from data have made it possible to
exploit distributed networks of interconnected sensors, data sources, and computing resources in
collaborative, integrative analysis of data. These developments, together with the ongoing
transformation of many traditionally data-poor sciences into increasingly data-rich sciences, offer
unprecedented opportunities for data-driven discovery in bioinformatics, environmental
informatics, social inform
 atics, health informatics, enterprise informatics, security informatics (among others). T!
 his has led to a compelling vision for cyberinfrastructure for collaborative e-science.

Consequently, there is a growing interest in e-science cyberinfrastructure as evidenced by several
recent workshops and symposia on related topics: The 2006 Fall Symposium on Semantic Web for
Collaborative Knowledge Acquisition (SWeCKa 2006), the 2006 International Workshop on Collaborative
Virtual Research Environments (CVRE 2006), the 2007 IJCAI Workshop on Semantic Web for Collaborative
