[Dbworld] SeCoGIS: deadline approaching

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
      First International Workshop on Semantic and Conceptual Issues
             in Geographic Information Systems (SeCoGIS 2007)

                http://cs.ulb.ac.be/conferences/secogis07/

                        in conjunction with the
   Twenty-Sixth International Conference on Conceptual Modeling (ER 2007)
               Auckland, New Zealand, November 05-09, 2007
                             Call for Papers
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

The recent advances in remote sensing, positioning systems, and mobile
technologies have increased the production, collection, and diffusion of
geo-referenced data, thus requiring the rapid development and the wide
deployment of multiple geographic information systems. With the popularity
of the World Wide Web and the diversity of GISs on the Internet, geographic
information can now be available via personal devices anytime and anywhere.
Nowadays GIS is emerging as a common information infrastructure, which
penetrates into more and more aspects of our society, and converges with
most areas in the IT scenario, such as office automation, workflow, digital
libraries, Web searching, and virtual reality. This has given rise to new
challenges in order to accommodate new users requirements for new
applications. Conceptual modeling and semantic web technologies provide
complementary solutions for these issues. They allow to elicit and capture
user requirements as well as the semantics of the target application domain.

The workshop on Semantic and Conceptual Issues for GIS combines together
two successful series of workshops, Conceptual Modeling for Geographic
Information Systems (CoMoGIS), held in 2004, 2005, and 2006, and

[Dbworld] CFC: Computational Methodologies in Gene Regulatory Networks

CALL FOR CHAPTERS
Submission Deadlines: proposals due on June 15, 2007, full manuscripts due on December 15, 2007

COMPUTATIONAL METHODOLOGIES IN GENE REGULATORY NETWORKS
URL: www.ksu.edu/cmgrn
Email: cmgrn@...
A book edited by Doina Caragea, Sanjoy Das, W. H. Hsu, Stephen M. Welch, Kansas State University, USA.
(The list of authors is in alphabetical order)

INTRODUCTION
Recent advances in gene sequencing technology are shedding light on the complex interplay between genes
that elicit phenotypic behavior characteristic of any given organism. It is now known that in order to
mediate external as well as internal signals, an organism's genes are organized into complex signaling
pathways. Unfortunately, unraveling the specific details about how these genetic pathways interact to
regulate development, life histories, and respond to environmental cues, is proving to be a daunting
task. A wide variety of models depicting gene-gene interactions, that are commonly referred to as gene
regulatory networks (GRNs), have been proposed. A wide variety of computational tools are available for
modeling gene regulatory networks.

OVERALL OBJECTIVES
A gene regulatory network (GRN) must be able to mimic experimentally observed behavior and also be
computationally tractable. Under these circumstances, model simplicity is an important trade-off for
functional fidelity. Modeling approaches taken by researchers are wide and disparate. Some gene
regulatory networks are modeled entirely using non-parametric approaches such as Bayesian or neural
networks, while some others represent genes in very physically realistic differential equation
formats. The book will focus on the computational methods widely used in modeling gene regulatory
networks, including structure discovery, learning and optimization. Both research and survey papers
are welcome.

[Dbworld] Deadline approaching - Scalable Uncertainty Management 2007

Call for Papers

International Conference on Scalable Uncertainty Management (SUM-2007)

Oct 10-12, 2007
Washington DC area

http://www.umiacs.umd.edu/conferences/sum2007/

There is now intense interest in both the Artificial Intelligence
community and in the Database community on managing uncertainty and
inconsistency in databases. However, researchers in AI may not
necessarily be aware of database concerns and conversely, database
researchers may not always be aware of AI concerns and past
contributions. The Scalable Uncertainty Modeling conference aims to
bring all those interested in the management of large volumes of
uncertainty together, irrespective of whether they are in databases
or in AI. Papers are solicited in all areas of massive uncertainty
including, but not restricted to, the topics listed below.

  * probability logic
  * semantics of uncertain data
  * formal models of uncertain data
  * reasoning with inconsistent and uncertain information
  * fuzzy logic
  * annotated logic
  * Bayesian models
  * Markov models
  * paraconsistent logic
  * uncertain DB algebras

[Dbworld] Deadline extended: Special Issue of IJEC on Click Fraud

Call for Papers for a Special Issue of
International Journal of Electronic Commerce
 on
CLICK FRAUD

GUEST EDITORS
Mohammad Mahdian, Research Scientist, Yahoo Research Labs, mahdian <at> yahoo-inc.com
Jan Pedersen, Chief Scientist, Search and Marketplace, Yahoo! Inc, jpederse <at> yahoo-inc.com
Kerem Tomak, Principal Research Scientist, Search and Marketplace, Yahoo! Inc, Kerem@...

OVERVIEW
One of the current and widely used revenue models for online advertising involves charging for each click
based on the popularity of a particular keyword and the number of competing advertisers. This
pay-per-click model leaves room for a number of individuals, organized groups or even rival companies to
generate “false” clicks. They click on links on self-owned or competitor-owned web sites with no
intention to “convert” - meaning following the click, make a purchase or sign up for services etc. - but
still either get paid themselves or force others to pay since they generated traffic by doing so. This
activity is called “click fraud.” Yahoo defines click fraud as, "clicks arising for reasons other than
the good-faith intention of an Internet user to visit a Web site to purchase goods or services or to obtain
information," while Google has a more specific definition "invalid clicks is defined as any method used
to artificially and/or maliciously generate clicks or page impre!
 ssions."
As a recent cover story by Business Week suggests that although it is not clear how significant a problem
click fraud is, it still is shadowing the growth of the online advertising market. This is clear from the
announcement by Google CEO Eric Schmidt who told the advertising community that click fraud is a Google
AdWords reality and that advertisers should just plan on allocating 20-30% of their total spend to
fraudulent click activity.
Necessity to define click fraud,-forced the online advertising industry to establish Click Measurement
Working Group as part of an Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) with the participation of major search
providers such as Google and Yahoo.  The purpose of this group is to “provide the detailed definition of

[Dbworld] CFP the 3rd IEEE DASC'07

The 3rd IEEE International Symposium on
Dependable, Autonomic and Secure Computing (DASC¡¯07)
25-27 September, 2007
Loyola College Graduate Center, Columbia, MD, USA

http://www.DASC-conference.org/

IMPORTANT DATES:
Submission deadline: 10 May, 2007
Notification of acceptance: 15 June, 2007
Final manuscript due: July 1st, 2007
Symposium: 25-27 September, 2007

CALL FOR PAPERS
As computer systems become increasingly large and complex, their Dependability, Security and Autonomy
play critical role at supporting next-generation science, engineering, and commercial applications.
These systems consist of heterogeneous software/hardware/network components of changing
capacities, availability, and in varied contexts. They provide computing services to large pools of
users and applications, and thus are exposed to a number of dangers such as accidental/deliberate
faults, virus infections, malicious attacks, illegal intrusions, and natural disasters etc. As a
result, too often computer systems fail, become compromised, or perform poorly and therefore
untrustworthy. Thus, it remains a challenge to design, analyze, evaluate, and improve the
dependability and security for a trusted computing environment. Trusted computing targets computing
and communication systems as well as services that are autonomous, dependable, secure, privacy
protect-able, predictable,!
  traceable, controllable, assessable and sustainable.

The scale and complexity of information systems evolve towards overwhelming the capability of system
administrators, programmers, and designers. This calls for the autonomic computing paradigm, which
meets the requirement of self-management by providing self-optimization, self-healing,
