                       Crete, Greece, October 1- 2, 2006

                            <http://www.ectel06.org>

           *******************************************************
*** Please forward this call to your Ph.D. Students ***
           *******************************************************

                             ---Introduction---

The ECTEL Doctoral Consortium is intended to bring together Ph.D. students
working on topics related to professional training. The doctoral consortium
will offer Ph.D. students the opportunity to present, discuss, and receive
feedback on their research in an interdisciplinary and international
atmosphere.

The doctoral consortium will be accompanied by prominent professors and researchers in the field of
professional learning. These accompanying professors will
participate actively and contribute to the discussions.

The doctoral consortium is co-located with and will take place immediately
before the ECTEL 2006 conference. The doctoral consortium language is English.

                           ---Topics of Interest---

As for the ECTEL conference, all topics from the field of professional
learning are of interest for the doctoral consortium.
These topics include (but are not limited to):

Collaborative Learning:

                              ---Submission---

Papers describing doctoral work should be submitted in PDF or PostScript
format before June 7, 2006. The paper length should not exceed 6 pages
(single linespace, Times New Roman (or similar) font type, 12 pt font size,
reasonable margins).

In contrast to regular conference papers, submissions should address
specifically doctoral work! Therefore, the following elements are recommended:

 - A clear formulation of the research question.
 - An identification of the significant problems in the field of research.
 - An outline of the current knowledge of the problem domain, as well as
   the state of existing solutions.
 - A presentation of any preliminary ideas, the proposed approach and the
   results achieved so far.
 - A sketch of the applied research methodology.
 - A description of the Ph.D. project's contribution to the problem solution.
 - A discussion of how the suggested solution is different, new, or better
as compared to existing approaches to the problem.

The intention of this doctoral consortium is to support and inspire
Ph.D. students during their ongoing research efforts. Therefore, it is
necessary that authors will have neither achieved their Ph.D. degree nor
officially submitted their thesis before the doctoral consortium (October
2, 2006). To enforce this rule we require authors to disclose their
expected graduation date and their advisor's name when submitting.

Papers will be reviewed by at leas two members of the doctoral consortium
committee. Accepted papers will be published in the workshop
proceedings. Papers will also be made available electronically to the
participants before the symposium to facilitate preparation of discussions
and questions. Presentations will be kept short (10-15 minutes). A
discussant, a member of the doctoral consortium committee, will be
appointed to each paper. Discussant comments will be followed by a plenary
discussion of the paper. At the end of the consortium there will be a
general discussion, including a brainstorming session about current and
future research topics in the area.

Only electronic submissions are accepted. E-mail your paper as an
attachment in PDF or Postscript format to
dc-ectel06@...

A supporting letter should be sent by the PhD supervisor by e-mail to
dc-ectel06@... or by Fax: +49 241
8021513 to Ralf
Klamma

Participants should register for the ECTEL conference itself at student rate.

[Dbworld] 2nd VLDB Data Management in Grids workshop 2006

VLDB Workshop on Data Management in Grids
http://liris.cnrs.fr/~jpierson/DMG_VLDB06/

Co-located with VLDB'06
Seoul, Korea, 10-11 September 2006

****************************************
*    DEADLINE : 15 May 2006            *
****************************************

Context :
---------
VLDB'06 (Very Large Data Bases, http://www.vldb.org/) is the 32th Conference in the series: It is one of
the top conferences on the management of data bases in the world.

This workshop is the second workshop organized at VLDB on the topic of Data Management in Grids, after the
success of the 1st edition in 2005.

Topics of Interest :
--------------------
Since the mid nineties and the emergence of Grids, many research activities have been initiated in
relation to data management in these dynamic, heterogeneous and cross-organisational environments.
The database community can offer her unique expertise in the management of very large, widely
distributed databases. Conversely, Grids offer a novel and very exciting field of research for database
scientists both in terms of application domains and fundamental research.

This workshop is intended to bring together these two communities, and thus to offer a unique workspace for
researchers to discuss and exchange ideas about the emerging challenges and opportunities offered by
Data Grids.

Relevant topics for the workshop include all aspects related to the management of data in a Grid
(non-exhaustive list) :
- Data Access
- Data Interoperability
- Semantic Grids
- Mediation / Negotiation
- Security: access control, policy, privacy
- Authenticity and integrity
- Data Placement: replication, migration
- Data Streams
- Metadata Management
- Indexing
- Query processing
- Caching
- Data Warehouses
- Unique identification of data entities
- Data Definition/Model Management
- Data De-identification
- Data scheduler and data-aware scheduling
- Information sharing
- Information dissemination
- Infrastructure independence for data management
