[Dbworld] Workshop on Innovations in Web Infrastructures (IWI2005)

                    PRELIMINARY CALL FOR PAPERS

1st International Workshop on Innovations In Web Infrastructure (IWI 2005)
    Co-Located with the 14th World-Wide Web Conference (WWW2005)
                    Japan, May 2005

GOAL
The way in which information is communicated between interested
parties has a critical influence on the way that information is
stored, structured and presented. To fully understand the
capabilities of the Semantic Web and how they can be used,
therefore, we need to understand more about this dependency
between the underlying communications infrastructure and
distributed hyperlinked document collections. There are many open
research problems, both at the level of the communications
infrastructure and in terms of how different infrastructures can
be exploited to create interesting new capabilities. The goal of
IWI, therefore, is to bring together researchers working, at
various levels, to discuss common problems and share insights.

WORKSHOP THEME
The World-Wide Web provides us with a distributed hyperlinked
document repository. Documents made available on the web contain
hyperlinks that refer to other pages on the web, allowing users
viewing a particular document to navigate to those other pages via
the hyperlinks in the document. Underlying the web is a
communications infrastructure, which is responsible for
implementing much of the structure of the document repository. For
example, in the current web, when a user chooses to navigate from

[Dbworld] NEW BOOK: An Advanced Course in Database Systems

An Advanced Course in Database Systems: Beyond Relational Databases
Suzanne W. Dietrich and Susan D. Urban
Prentice Hall, 2005
ISBN: 0-13-042898-1

This book is a dissemination component of a grant from the
National Science Foundation Division of Undergraduate Education
(DUE-9980417) - "Advanced Database Concepts for Undergraduates".

FROM THE BACK COVER:
An Advanced Course in Database Systems goes beyond the relational
database coverage of a typical first course and offers readers a
carefully researched set of topics specifically designed for a
second course in database systems: object-oriented conceptual data
modeling, object-oriented databases, object-relational databases,
and databases and the Web. The target audience of the book is anyone
who understands relational database technology, including
both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as the database
professional. The book bridges the gap between the UML and EER
object-oriented conceptual data models, guiding the reader through
the latest technological advances in object databases and the
integration of databases and the World-Wide Web.

SIGNIFICANT FEATURES:
* Provides detailed coverage of UML class diagrams including
a comparative analysis with EER diagrams.
* Establishes the foundation for object-relational concepts
by offering in-depth coverage of the Object Data Standard.
* Gives comprehensive coverage of advanced relational and
object-relational features of the SQL standard.

[Dbworld] Mining Software Repositories (MSR 2005) - Call For Papers

CALL FOR PAPERS

INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON MINING SOFTWARE REPOSITORIES (MSR 2005)
   http://msr.uwaterloo.ca/

   17th May, 2005
   Saint Louis, Missouri, USA

   Co-located with ICSE 2005,
IEEE International Conference on Software Engineering
   http://www.cs.wustl.edu/icse05/

INTRODUCTION

Software repositories such as source control systems, archived
communications between project personnel, and defect tracking systems are
used to help manage the progress of software projects. Software
practitioners and researchers are beginning to recognize the potential
benefit of mining this information to support the maintenance of software
systems, improve software design/reuse, and empirically validate novel
ideas and techniques. Research is now proceeding to uncover the ways in
which mining these repositories can help to understand software
development, to support predictions about software development, and to
plan various aspects of software projects.

The goal of this one-day workshop is to establish a community of
researchers and practitioners who are working to recover and use the data
stored in software repositories to further understanding of software
development practices. We expect the presentations and discussions in this
workshop to continue on a number of general themes and challenges, from

  Final Call for Papers
2nd European Semantic Web Conference (ESWC2005)
  May 29 to June 1, 2005
  Heraklion, Crete (Greece)

Full Paper Submission: December 15th, 2004
  +++ Upcoming Deadline +++

-----------------------------------------
GENERAL INFORMATION

The vision of the Semantic Web is to enhance today's web via the exploitation of machine-processable meta
data. The explicit representation of the semantics of data, accompanied with domain theories
(Ontologies), will enable a web that provides a qualitatively new level of service. It will weave
together an incredibly large network of human knowledge and will complement it with machine
processability. Various automated services will help the user to achieve goals by accessing and
providing information in machine-understandable form. This process may ultimately create extremely
knowledgeable systems with various specialized reasoning services systems. Many technologies and
methodologies are being developed within Artificial Intelligence, Human Language Technology,
Machine Learning, Databases, Software Engineering and Information Systems that can contribute
towards the realization of this vision.

[Dbworld] CFP: AAA-IDEA '05

                    International Workshop on
               Advanced Architectures and Algorithms
              for Internet Delivery and Applications
                   Orlando, FL - June 16, 2005
               (AAA-IDEA '05: http://aaa-idea.org)

                    in conjunction with
International Conference on Multimedia Services Access Networks
               (MSAN '05: http://www.msan.org)

Innovations in content delivery systems continue to have strong
impact on our world, resulting in a surge of research interest in
both content delivery applications and the web/network
infrastructure that supports novel applications based on Internet.
Scalability issues pose a number of challenging problems to solve
for both applications and the underlying infrastructure.
Accesses to multimedia and QoS sensitive services through a large
variety of Internet devices require guaranteed performance, resource
availability and proximity of content to the network access points.
While exact load and resource characterization in the open Internet
environment is difficult to attain, some forms of performance
assurance are highly desirable, especially in the face of large
uncertainty. There is a number of open research challenges in
optimizing and improving content delivery mechanisms and support
for delivered content.

The goal of this one-day workshop is to bring together researchers,
developers, web service providers, application and network designers
from academia and industry to exchange ideas about the problems they
are facing and to discuss recent and innovative solutions.
