The recent evolution and successful development of Wireless Local Area
Networks (WLANs), Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs), Ad Hoc
Networks, and Sensor Networks have yielded a demand to improve the
Medium Access Control (MAC) Layer. The key goals of this improvement
include Quality of Service (QoS) support mechanisms, efficient channel
access mechanisms, and energy saving mechanisms, etc. The effort to
improve the MAC layer is linked with many technical challenges
including compatibility with legacy networks, complexity in
implementation, and practical values in real market, etc. The need to
address QoS support, MAC enhancement, and energy saving and provide
timely, solid technical contributions in the MAC layer of these
networks establishes the motivation behind this special issue.

Recently, the demand for wireless communications has grown
tremendously. The need for "information anywhere anytime" has been a
driving force for the increasing growth and advances in wireless
communication and portable computing devices. The field of mobile
computing and wireless computing is the merging place of these advances
in information processing and communication with the aim of providing
seamless and ubiquitous computing environment for mobile users.
Location management, mobility management, and paging management are
critical issues to provide "information anywhere anytime." Furthermore,

Three PhD Positions in Amsterdam and Delft

Three PhD Vacancies in Amsterdam and Delft
------------------------------------------

The Adaptive Information Disclosure (AID) project is part of a
larger effort aimed at the creation of a Virtual Lab environment
for e-science (VL-E). In the context of AID we will be building
a suite of dynamic, model driven information and knowledge
extraction tools on top of an architecture for grid-based
distributed data analysis. Keywords are: semantic models, agent
technology, formal concept analysis, datamining, text mining,
grid mining, grammar induction, information extraction, question
answering, and the dynamic maintenance of ontologies.

Within the AID project we have three PhD positions available:

1. Operations on Ontologies (at TNO-TPD, Delft/the Free University
of Amsterdam)
2. Semantic Learning with Specific Application to Ontologies (at
the University of Amsterdam)
3. Ontology-based Retrieval (at the University of Amsterdam)

Further information about these vacancies is available at
http://www.science.uva.nl/~mdr/Projects/AID/index.html

Prospective candidates should apply with a cover letter, CV,
statement of research interests and accomplishments, and names
and email addresses of 3 references. The ability to proactively
cooperate with fellow researchers and good written and oral
English language skills are prerequisites for this position.

		   *Early registration ends May 10*

SIGMOD and PODS are two leading forums for database researchers,
theoreticians, designers, practitioners, developers, and users to
explore cutting-edge ideas and to exchange techniques, tools, and
experiences. The 23rd edition of SIGMOD and PODS will be held in
Paris, France, at "La maison de la chimie", a prestigious conference
center located in the heart of Paris close to the Boulevard
Saint-Germain (http://www.maisondelachimie.com).

Few cities leave the visitor with such vivid impressions thanks to so
many historical and cultural attractions. The Eiffel Tower,
Notre-Dame, the ancient alleyways and cobbled lanes of the historic
Latin Quarter, Le Louvre, Le musée d'Orsay, the sound of blues in
atmospheric cellar bars, are samples of many other well-known symbols
of the City of Lights.

Workshop on Algorithms and Models for the Web-Graph WAW2004

		Call for Papers & Participation
Third Workshop on Algorithms and Models for the Web-Graph WAW2004
		Saturday, October 16, 2004,
			Rome, Italy

		in conjunction with FOCS 2004

http://www.almaden.ibm.com/cs/people/ravi/waw2004.html

The World Wide Web has become part of our everyday life and
information retrieval and data mining on the web is now of enormous
practical interest. Some of the algorithms supporting these activities
are based substantially on viewing the web as a graph, induced in
various ways by links among pages, links among hosts, or other similar
networks.

The aim of the 2004 Workshop on Algorithms and Models for the
Web-Graph (WAW2004) is to further the understanding of these
web-induced graphs, and stimulate the development of high-performance
algorithms and applications that use the graph structure of the web.
The workshop is meant both to foster an exchange of ideas among the
diverse set of researchers already involved in this topic, and to act
as an introduction for the larger community to the state of the art in
this area.

This is the third edition of a very successful workshop on this topic, WAW
2002, held in conjunction with the 43rd Annual IEEE Symposium on
Foundations of Computer Science, FOCS 2002, WAW2003, held in conjunction
with the Twelfth International World Wide Web Conference, WWW 2003.

CVDB04. Call for Participation

		    CVDB'04 Call for Participation

First International Workshop on Computer Vision meets Databases
			      CVDB 2004

In cooperation with the ACM SIGMOD/PODS 2004 Conference

Maison de la Chimie, Paris, France, June 13, 2004

			http://cvdb04.irisa.fr

*The site is open for registration*

----------------------------------------------------------------------

				Scope

For decades, the computer vision community has been working on
content-based multimedia retrieval. Researchers from that community
focus on increasing the recognition power of their image description
schemes and they usually evaluate their strength using data sets that
fit in main memory because they try to avoid the secondary storage
management burden.

Facilitating the management of very large amounts of data and removing
this disk burden has long been a strong motivation for the database
community. This is particularly crucial for multimedia databases whose
sizes grow very fast. As such, researchers in databases have proposed
many smart multidimensional indexing schemes with some elegant
algorithms to compute Nearest-Neighbor and Top-N queries.

ACM SIGMOD/VLDB Digital Library Donation Program

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

           SIGMOD/VLDB DIGITAL LIBRARY DONATION PROGRAM

               http://pike.ewha.ac.kr/sigmod-dvd

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

ACM SIGMOD and the VLDB Foundation have established a joint program
to donate database literature to universities in developing countries,
with the goal of assisting in the expansion of the database community
in those countries. Currently available literature includes
SIGMOD's Silver Edition and the SIGMOD 2003 DiSC, both on DVDs.
The Silver Edition is a comprehensive collection of 30 years of
database research literature and related materials; the complete
table of contents for the Silver Edition can be found at
http://www.informatik.uni-trier.de/~ley/db/anthology.html.
The 2003 DiSC contains the proceedings of many database research
conferences that took place in 2002, plus database research
journal issues from that year and other related materials; see
http://sigmod.discgenesis.net/ for the complete table of contents.

A request for a donation should be made by visiting our website
(http://pike.ewha.ac.kr/sigmod-dvd) and filling out an application
form. An explicit designation that the applicant agrees to the
rules is required. The rules are as follows.

(1) The donated material is for the use by all patrons of the
    recipient library.
(2) The library will make the donated material available for
