new WIKI page: Your Robot controller dies without trace? Catch exceptions

Hi all,

Did you ever change a little (or a lot) in your robot controller
program and found it dies immediately after loading, or somewhere in
the middle of some new or old action?
And then, how do you find out what went wrong in the program?

It occured to me, after some extensive reshuffling of code and moving
code to new external classes.

After an evening of puzzling, trying and failing, I finally added
exception handling to the main parts of my program, which was
initially based on the Webots Judoka0 sample program.

I like to share this information and my exception handling code with
new Webots users and anyone who runs into the same proplems and did
not think of adding exception handling themself.

Hi all

Sorry for this question, but i can't find any information about where and

I tried several possibilities without success.
After I register i'm logged in. But if I log out, I can not re-login. I

Re: Where to upload the controller ?

Hi,

I'm back from Las Vegas where I advertised the Judo contest at the IROS
2003 conference (among other nice things).

It seems that the registration script was broken down. I just fixed
that. Could you try again ? I saw that the following competitors tryed
to register unsuccessfully:

SkullRats Sonovabic Tyraael Lascars Les_Lascars bender bothari Grumpy
KInator K.I.nator momo Muhammad_Ai Platin-Fighter

Could you try again ?

Sorry for the trouble. And see you all soon in the hall of fame!

BTW, I saw that Coyote is not any more #1 and left the position to
Albathor... The top 5 robots seems to be very good... I am looking
forward the new generation to arrive... How many will enter the top 5 ?...

Cheers,

-Olivier

Re: Webots Judo Contest Webview Problem

Hi,

I thought I fixed this bug. Could you try to download the newest version
of Webview for Windows from here:

http://cyberboticspc1.epfl.ch/webview/setup/webview-setup-2.0.4.exe

and let me know if this new version is working better ?

Thanks.

New version of Webview for Mac OS X

David,

Can you try out this new version of Webview for Mac OS X ?

http://cyberboticspc1.epfl.ch/webview/setup/webview-macosx-2.0.4.tar.gz

To use it, you will have to open a terminal console and type:

cd webview.app/Contents/MacOS
./webview # this is for viewing online matches
or ./webview file.wva # this is for viewing match playback files

Welcome to KInator!

Hi,

It seems that the new governor of California (see picture in the hall of
fame) entered the contest with a brilliant performace: KInator (that's
his pseudo) entered directly #1 with a very simple but efficient walking
trajectory after a +14 progress in the hall of fame! The corresponding
single .class file is only 6427 bytes (comparing with the ~ 30KB of
Albathor spread over 5 classes, this is pretty impressive). Albathor
succeeded only once to push him out of the ring, but that was not enough...

So, KInator is very efficient at making a long distance, but it is not
agressive nor defensive at all. This is an easy prey for Albathor,
Coyote, chunky and others. But none of them could reach him to push him
out (except Albathor for once).

Challengeous, isn't it ?

I guess, it is now up to Albathor, Coyote, chunky, Kimaita, gollum and
others to show us that such a gentle robot should not stay at top too
long... ;)

Nice rounds in perspective...

Beware: KInator is the very first version of the very first student from
Zurich. We expect about 12 other such students to enter the contest
before the end of next week... So, it may be time to watch out...

In any case, welcome and congrat's to KInator!

Re: Welcome to KInator!

Hi all

Sorry for this not-yet-sophisticated version of my controller.
I almost feel a little bit uncomfortable with K.I.nators "uprising" on the
first day :o).
But I think this is at least a good input to change/adapt your strategies.
Imagine I would have uploaded this version a day before due date.

If you develop strategies against K.I.nator, please don't hit him too hard!
Soon I will implement a much more sophisticated controller.

Looking forward to some thrilling fights! :)

Re: New version of Webview for Mac OS X

Olivier,
Thanks, I can see some robots fighting ;) There seems to be a problem
with the mouse as it 'glues' to the window when I click on it and I can
only release the cursor by hitting 'esc'. Rather unusual (...)

Thanks

Welcome to RoyBatty / Rule change: today

Hello,

I was pleased yesterday to see a new competitor popup in the all of
fame. RoyBatty, from the UK, did a nice performance for its first hit,
entering directly at rank #6 with a nice long pathway walking strategy.
The rest of the hall of fame remains almost unchanged since no
controller update were submitted yesterday.

Today will probably see a few important changes in the hall of fame as I
will introduce the rule change promised a couple of weeks ago:

If the height (Y) of the robot's body drops below 0.45 for more than 5
seconds, then the robot loose.

I am aware of some robots ready to handle this rule change and even take
advantage of it by being able to re-stand up rapidly after they fall
down (they have to hurry up though)... We'll see that, maybe today...

Two new competitors and not so many changes...

Hi,

It seems that the new rule didn't changed so many things in the hall of
fame. However, a few noticeable changes occured and it seems difficult
to say if that are directly due to the rule change...

First: Albathor got back to #1 after winning 3-2 against KInator (maybe
not due to the rule change).
Kimaita won over chunky (this may be due to the rule change).
kp2 won over FreeTime (clearly due to the rule change).

Nice to notice a couple of new competitors: Shrdlu (Switzerland) who
arrived directly at rank 12 and Les_Lascars (France) which lost the
match against Shrdlu and hence remained at the very bottom for this
round. Maybe another chance next monday ?

If you already have a controller optimized for the new rule, it's now
time to submit it as the round server seems to handle properly the rule
change.

We are now 18 competitors on the hall of fame!

PS: if ever you enter the contest, please submit a flag with a 64x64
resolution as I often need to resize manually competitor flags which are
usually too big...

Cheers,

-Olivier
