Hexapod Robot

Hi...I would like to know if someone has a hexapod robot (.wbt file) with 3 DOF on each leg to use on Webots simulation.
I hope someone can help me.
Thanks

New Competition

Hi all,

So this new competition, looks very like the old Alife Contest, i.e. would people's old alife controller code be useful here now? (Unfortunetely I've lost all my old Alife code is its back to the drawing board for me :-) )

Hopefully I'll get a controller on the leader board soon!

Hip Robotamus.

Rat's Life contest update

Hi all,

I am not sure there are still many people reading messages on this list (as it is not too much used any more), but I wanted to keep the last readers posted about our new Rat's Life contest: http://www.ratslife.org and possibly convince them to join us in this promising new event...

A contest round is now run every day at 8pm (Central European Time) with nice automatic movies created for each round. I would recommend you to have a look at the very last match between the two top competitors, antoinea101 and Freshmen: http://www.cyberbotics.com/ratslife/movies/08.02.18_antoinea101_vs_Freshmen_s.avi to see the level of intelligence reached so far by our best little rat brains... ;)

We have currently 9 active competitors out of 50 registered users. As you can see on the hall of fame, the contest is currently dominated by Swiss (5), Romanian (2), Hungarian (1) and Turkish (1) competitors. But where are the French, American, British, Iranian, German, Indian, etc? Will they let the Swiss people win the fame and the prizes (an e-puck robot and a Webots pack) that easily?

Feel free to spread the word about the contest and don't be afraid to step in. The level of intelligence of our rat brains and the fame of the winners will increase with the number of competitors! A PDF sheet with our call for contest is available here: http://www.ratslife.org/call.pdf (feel free to use it to help us promoting the contest).

In previous editions of similar contests we had entire classrooms participating (from Zürich, Edinburgh, Brazil). If you know professors who might be interested to have their programming or robotics class participating in the contest, let them know. The final mark doesn't necessarily need to be based on the hall of fame ranking ;)

Thank you for your support!

-Olivier

[ANNOUNCE] Rat's Life robot programming contest

/**********************************************************************/
/*               RAT'S LIFE: robot programming contest                */
/*              ---------------------------------------               */
/*                                                                    */
/*                         call for contest                           */
/*                                                                    */
/*                      http://www.ratslife.org                       */
/*                                                                    */
/**********************************************************************/

This contest is organized by the ICEA project to promote research results
and stimulate further interest in bio-inspired robotics control. The
participation to the contest is open to anyone and free of charge.

CHALLENGE

Rat's Life is a complete cognitive robotics benchmark that was carefully
designed to be easily reproducible in a research lab with limited
resources. The real setup relies on two e-puck robots, some LEGO bricks
while the simulation setup relies on the Webots robot simulation software.
This benchmark is a survival game where two robots compete against each
other for resources in an unknown maze. Like the rats in cognitive animal
experimentation, the e-puck robots look for feeders which allow them to live
longer than their opponent. Once a feeder is reached by a robot, the robot
draws energy from it and the feeder becomes unavailable for a while. Hence,
the robot has to further explore the maze, searching for other feeders while
remembering the way back to the first ones. This allows them to be able to
refuel easily again and again and hopefully live longer than their opponent.
The e-puck robots are equipped with several several sensors, including a
camera, 8 distance sensors and a 3D accelerometer. Developing a robot
controller requires basic programming skills in Java language. Different
approaches can be investigated and combined with each other, including robot
control, image processing, landmark based navigation, self localization and
mapping (SLAM), game strategy, autonomy management, AI, learning, etc.

SCHEDULE

The contest starts on January 7th, 2007 and terminates on June 30th, 2007.
During this period, the contest remains open to new competitors. Every
business day, a contest round is executed so that every competitor will
face at least one opponent and the general ranking is updated accordingly
in the hall of fame. All the matches of a round are immediately visible
online from the contest web site.

PRIZES

On June 30th, the competitor ranked #1 in the hall of fame will receive the
simulation prize of the Rat's Life contest: a license of the Webots PRO
software (about EUR 2,000). Then, the top 5 competitors ranked #1, #2, #3,
#4 and #5 will be selected for a real world series of 4 rounds. These 4
rounds will executed with two real e-puck robots roaming a real LEGO maze.
After this series of 4 rounds, the new #1 will be awarded a real e-puck
robot (about EUR 600).

HOW TO ENTER

Participation to the Rat's Life contest is totally free of charge and
doesn't require the purchase of any product or service. To enter the contest,
you will have to register on the www.ratslife.org web site, download and
install the demo version of the Webots software, program your robot controller
and submit your code on the contest web site.

Artificial Intelligence And Emotion ?

In the context of "inventing'' AI, it is not unusual to look at aspects other than intelligence in humans.
Our ability to handle fuzziness in verbal communication is one of these aspects that has attracted
interest. Today fuzzy logic is an established subfield of AI.
  Another aspect is the presence of emotion. There is much debate on the importance and relevance of .....

Problems with Ubuntu

Hello,

I am having the same problem as described on message #1447. I'd like
to know if there is a solution for this problem already? I am running
an Ubuntu system with JDK 1.5.

Re: AIBO - Roboka - Straightening!

Hi,

Depending on the forces applying to joints and the current position of
the joints and the robot, it may be difficult to restore the initial
joint positions from the servo_set_position() function. Instead, I would
recommend you to use the "stand me up" capability showed in the
Roboka0.java source code which will efficiently restore the initial
position of the robot based on a supervisor process.

Please post such questions to the webots-contest mailing list, so that
other can take advantage of it and possibly contribute.

Cheers,

-Olivier

Re: (unknown)

That still doesn't work but this time it doesn't completey crash Firefox it now prints up a messagebox:
"This plug-in performed an illegal operation. You are strongly advised to restart Firefox."

Hi,

I believe I fixed that problem... Could you remove the plugin and
install it again? To remove it, simply delete either of the following files:

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins\npwplayer.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\<your name>\Application
Data\Mozilla\Firefox\plugins\wplayer.dll

It is unlikely that the two files are present on your system, rather you
should have either the first one or the second one depending on your
admin rights when you installed the plugin.

Once deleted, you should quit Firefox and relaunch it. Then, you should
be able to see the "install" button again on http://roboka.org or
http://www.cyberbotics.com/wplayer/ Just follow the normal installation
procedure and let me know if Firefox still crashes (it doesn't crash any
more on my machine...) .

Please let me know if that fixes the problem also for you!
