Gmane

As group administrator I have received a request that the kicad-user
group is added to the Gmane news/mail list/archive. Details of what
Gmane does can be found here http://gmane.org/

The advantages would seem to be wider exposure for kicad and archiving
of the group messages. The disadvantages would be that anyone could
post to the group from outside it.

Opinions?

I think it is a good idea. I did not know nothing about Gmane, but I
have been having a look and it looks very interesting. It is very easy
to search.

Are you sure about that point? Wouldn't the external postings only
be viewable in gmane? If that's not the case, I'd go well beyond
describing this as a 'disadvantage'. Having control over membership
and message posting is a huge benefit for Yahoo group moderators.
For your sanity's sake, I'd hate to see you give that up.

On another group that I moderate, there are constantly people
joining the group just to post a spam message. It's easy enough to
ban them and delete their posts but it's an ongoing task. Opening
the list to non-member postings could have a tremendous negative
impact on the signal-to-noise ratio or, at a minimum, on your
moderating workload.

I am not 100% certain about it. However, the current group is set up
so that new users' posts are initially moderated by me. That makes it
easy to stop spam but alarge amount of spam would give me a problem.
That said I think Gmane can be set up so people cannot post direct to
this group. Even if we allow them to, Gmane only allows posts form
verifiable email addresses so that should also limit spam.

Re: Gmane

I might be repeating the obvious, but yahoogroups archiving is abysmall. I repeatedly find myself trying to locate a post that I remember was made just a few months ago. Usually I know the approximate date, have a few good keywords to use in a search, and still fail miserably to find the post that I am looking for.

Gmane is indexed by google. I do not know if something needs to be done for a new list to be indexed, or if it will 'just happen', but I often find answers to my questions by googling and finding the answer in a gmane-archived page.

I do not know about the moderation/administrative overhead that this might cause you, but from my humble reader perspective, being able to search the messages using google instead of yahoo's search would be most welcome.

Hi,
can i use kicad in win98?

Kicad is no more supported on W98, but in my experience versions NON unicode are usable with some printing troubles.

Naming nets

Hi,
I am confused as to how to name a net in eeschema. Is it linked to the
name of the pin on the component being used?

Also in the FAQ it mentions the cross probing. This does not seem to
do anything for me when I click on to the pin in the eeschema.

I have just recived back my first board from pcb-train in the UK which
I did on the KiCAD and it has worked well and I had no problem with
the gerbers etc.

I am using the 5 Jan 06 version on win 2K.

Feature request would be for easier net naming and maybe a wire link
layer (as used in easyPC) for the simple addition of wire links.

Quite impressed with the software and the more I use it the more I am
liking it.

cheers

dave-o
