[Ppcboot-users] PPCBOOT activities

Friends,

sorry for posting to both the "users" and the "internal" lists, but
it seems most of you are hanging out on "users" waiting for something
to happen...

OK - current status:

I started looking at the sources, checking old "fadsrom" and "8xxrom"
sources as well as contributions by several people (David Brown, Kirk
Haderlie), plus several other available sources (DINK32 by Motorola,
LiMon by Neil Russell, some ecos code by Cygnus).

I tried a few things out, and right now I have a quite nice (IMHO)
framework (just the very basic features) running on our TQ systems.

I have reached a point where I need your help.

Before I continue, I'd like to have a bit of discussion. There are
several design decisions where I'm not sure what makes sense.

(1) Small & simple versus flexible & powerfull

I can think of two different ways to implement "ppcboot":

    - Version "A" is configured at compile time for a specific CPU
model, clock rate, type and size of RAM, type and size of
      FLASH, etc.

    - Version "B" is more intelligent; it will auto-detect things

Right, that's exactly what it needs.

As long as we're going to reinvent the wheel again, we might as well
try making it round this time. - Mike Dennison

RE: PPCBOOT activities

Wolfgang,

My vote is for small & simple base, then modularize the more
complex and powerful bells & whistle to be added in by the user on a desired
basis. We like to get the smallest possible loader for our production
boards and then leave it alone.

I volunteer for any FADS testing we have an 823.

PPCBoot (previous 8xxROM) Project update

Hi,

updated the http://ppcboot.sourceforge.net/ project homepage and launched a
mailing list at http://lists.sourceforge.net/mailman/listinfo/ppcboot-users/.
Everybody interestend on the PPCBoot development should subscribe.
Announcements will be posted to ppcboot-announce and linuxppc-embedded :)

At the moment I have to merge patches from Rudi Hofer, David Brown, and Duncan Palmer
received until now before the CVS tree will work.
Found that the 8xxROM sources will become a problem to maintain if they stay in their
form as they today are! I think that one possible project goal will be the
maintainbility improvement of the sources and a configuration frontend :)

Auf der ppcboot-Homepage gibst Du als Link an:

Der funktioniert aber nicht!
