[EPAMP] an effect plugin API for media players: anyone interested?

Hello,

First of all, I'm sorry for the worst cross-posting ever.

My name's Stefano D'Angelo and I'm the author of NASPRO
(http://naspro.atheme.org), a project whose main aim is to build up a
system to make all sound processing APIs interoperable.

Since my project was recently accepted to become part of the Atheme
community (http://www.atheme.org) and began working close to the
audacious (http://audacious-media-player.org) developers, I could see
there actually were serious reasons behind the lack of standardization
for sound processing in the arena of media players.

Now, I wrote a first draft of a new sound processing API called EPAMP
especially targetted at media players; you can find it here:
http://naspro.atheme.org/content/epamp-draft-1

With this mail, I'm trying to get some feedback (possibly in the Talk
page on the NASPRO wiki) about it and possibly to involve anyone who
is interested in its development.

Anyway, notice that the user interface part of the API is still
missing and that my project (NASPRO) will support this new API, giving
applications using it the possibility to access non-EPAMP plugins
without touching a single line of code (currently supported APIs are
audacious' and LADSPA, while DSSI, LV2, GStreamer and possibly VST are
more or less planned for the near future).

In case you're not interested and want to start a flame, please just ignore me.

[PATCH] Fix compilation and bitmap depth on debian sid

Hi,

This is has finally reminded me to do something which I've been
meaning to do for far too long, which is upload the recent (well when
I say recent...) work I've done locally on Zinf (admittedly not much
but hey it's something...)

So, I've put a mercurial repository online at

http://hg.thepriorities.com/zinf/main

Probably the most interesting change is the inclusion of project files
to build it using Visual Studio 2005! I've also done some work to
finally remove the old music database and move everything over to
using the new one instead (some functionality in my repo are still
broken because of this).

Cheers,
David

[PATCH] Fix compilation and bitmap depth on debian sid

Hi all,
this list seems to be not so active, anyway I've tried zinf after
a long time, and I had several problems building and running it. This
patch fixes the build issues reported here:

http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_name=20070811210027.1d4e2c92%40darkstar.localhost&forum_name=zinf-support

and seems to be a correct fix to this tracker issue:

http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1033026&group_id=51494&atid=463479

Still getting segfaults on theme changes and on exit.
Patch on top of 2.2.5, please consider applying.

I'm posting the patch here and not on the tracker to ask also for the
project status... is anyone still working on zinf?

Arch Repository Moved

Hi,

As some of you have noticed my arch repository has been offline for a
while, as my university hosting for it was deleted when I graduated
last month.

So, I've put it up again at the new address of

http://www.thepriorities.com/zinf/arch2005/

This should be a direct copy of what used to be online at the old
address, though I don't currently have a computer with both Arch and
the Internet to test it with. If there are any problems with it let me
know.

As far as I remember you should only have to execute
# tla archive-register http://www.thepriorities.com/zinf/arch2005/
to start using the new address.

Cheers,
David.

PS. I've just got back from holiday, so my apologies that this has
taken a while.

Getting rid PlaylistItem and Creating a new Playlist

Hi,

Currently Zinf has two seperate ways of looking up track metadata with
both currently working in parallel, the new MusicDB used by the new
MusicBrowserMM and the old MusicCatalog used by everything else.

The old MusicCatalog is usually accessed via a PlaylistItem which was
stored in the Playlist. The Playlist dealt with the actual process of
looking up metadata and associating it with each track in the playlist.
The new MusicDB architecture, however, seperates the metadata from the
track in the playlist, with metadata being looked up as needed by the
plugins using the MusicDB.

Therefore, by switching everything to using the new MusicDB, there is no
longer a need for PlaylistItem or MusicCatalog. As the use of PlaylistItem
is so ingrained in the current implementation of the Playlist, when
getting rid of PlaylistItem it is probably much easier to just throw away
the old playlist and start over.

I've made a start on doing exactly this, and now have some vaugly working
code avaliable from my Arch repositry as the branch

david <at> thepriorities.com--2005/zinf--noitem--0.1

I've deleted both the old MusicCatalog and Playlist, and started work on a
prototype of a new Playlist that just uses track URLs instead of
PlaylistItem. This obviously requires some quite significant changes to
the rest of Zinf as well, some of which I've also done, but lots of things
have also been broken and not yet fixed by this.

I've currenlty only got the begginings of a new plylist implementation
(you can only add tracks at the moment, not move, remove, sort them etc.).
I've also split it into two seperate classes, PlaylistManager and
Playlist. PlaylistManager is intended to deal with switching between
multiple playlists, and providing the interface to the Player so it does
not need to know about multiple playlists, and the Playlist is simply the
list of URLs with an associated current index.

If anyone has any thoughts/code on what the playlist implementation should
look like, please post them to the mailing list so we can create a good
replacment for the old playlist.

Cheers,
David
