That workaround does not work for me. And I only have the problem after a
restart of the OS Ubuntu 10.10 It seems to be a problem with the config file and
only on a reboot. Apparently something is not getting set in the config that is
lost on reboot but maintained even upon multiple start and exit of the
application. Only it doesn't open on the same monitor/workspace (dual monitors)
which further indicates a config writing/reading problem.

I still can't find any reason why the stock, off-the-shelf code I used should
misbehave in this fashion. I have no doubt that the problems you guys have
experienced are real, but I really don't know what to do to work around it.

What I've decided to do is wait and see what happens with the new Ubuntu LTS
due out early this year. Rosegarden has no official supported version of an
official supported distro, but Ubuntu LTS is pretty much the de facto,
unofficial standard. If it works with Ubuntu LTS, that's good enough for me,
and if it doesn't, something is grievously wrong. We'll see how it comes out,
and go from there.

And I've not had this problem with RG 10 or 11 on Debian Sid, either.
Ubuntu's been getting kinda weird the last version or so - especially
their Unity interface isn't very cooperative sometimes with non-Ubuntu
apps - so it might be Ubuntu just being weird.

Pitch-bend ruler broken?

This is on version 11.11.42
The pitch bend ruler in matrix view seems heavily broken. Placing a
point at position in time it gets placed in randomly different places,
deleting points is not awlays possible and doing it erratically deletes
notes, as well as screwing up the undo sistem (i.e. you delete pitch
bend points, it deletes notes and you cannot undo it, so you have lost
those notes).

Not thet the pitch bend ruler has ever been the most usable tool. But at
least it used to work in a strange but predictable manner.

Any hint?

Lorenzo.

I've had the same experience with the pitch bend ruler also in recent
versions. It's not usable like this.

This is the first I've heard of catastrophic problems with the pitch bend
ruler. The new rulers since 10.02 or so have remained somewhat buggy and
unfinished, but at least barely usable. I tried to improve them a bit, and
didn't really succeed. Any additional gains here require the hand of a
sharper mind than mine; somebody like Ted Felix, say.

In any case, I've had a look at the carnage myself. The biggest problem I
note is that after you draw the first point with the pencil, the cursor
changes into a hand, and remains that way. This makes it considerably tricky
to put the next point where you want it.

I didn't reproduce any problems with failing to place a point somewhere
reasonable (ie. somewhere under the big hunk of real estate covered by the
hand cursor), with notes getting deleted, or with anything getting stuck
permanently in a state where undo would lead to permanent loss of data.

With two people reporting similar problems, I'm inclined to believe the
problems really exist, but I was not able to reproduce any of them. There's

Well I don't know if it would be unpolite to mention another software
which IMHO opinion does it quite right with the pitch bend and
controller rulers stuff.

Yes. and also it is not movable... I guess one would expect to be able
to click. then drag but you need to use the selection tool to do it.

I don't have time to really study the whole train wreck, but I took a copy of
the video to review later. That was extremely helpful, and a very good idea!

It looks like the rulers are pretty much hopelessly broken if you ever zoom.

I know the ruler selections are completely awful, and it's a miracle if you
manage to use one to accomplish something. I invested more time than you can
imagine trying to fix that, and I didn't achieve much.

That's just kind of how it goes around here. If that's ever going to get
fixed, somebody with a better set of skills than I possess will have to step
in and save the day. I'm a truck driver with a liberal arts degree in foreign
languages, and nothing much for math skills. I used to feel like some kind of
failure for not being able to be some super genius mad programmer, but I'm
more realistic, and more comfortable in my own skin now. I'm the most amazing
truck driver you're ever going to meet, but if you need a strong programmer
with well-developed skills, calling me is a waste of time. I might as well
ask the average Rosegarden user to pick up and deliver a load of gasoline.

No. When you record MIDI, the segment containing the recorded data gets
created as you go. Until you end the recording, the segment doesn't really
exist in the normal sense, so you can't open or view it.

Viewing notation for an emerging MIDI segment on the fly would be difficult to
achieve. I have no interest in attempting this, personally.
