BEEP! An unsupported operation was attempted.

Hi Folks

I am very new to MusEdit and I am having great difficulty with importing. I have tried setting the
preferences on the "Translating, Scrolling, Text Files, Graphic Image Export" Tab and all I get is:

BEEP! "An unsupported operation was attempted" This happens when I open the tab, the tab then opens but any
attempt to save a change brings up the same message again and none of the changes are saved.

I have uninstalled and re-installed the software several times, all to no avail.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I have a week long residential school to teach in April and am desperate to convert some of my learning
materials from Tabledit into Musedit. I don't mind doing in two passes but I don't want to have to
re-transcribe all of my work.

Yours frustratedly

Guy Rogers

Re: BEEP! An unsupported operation was attempted.

Hey Guy - No, no such troubles here on my system w/ Windoze 2000 & Musedit 4.0.0. I have edited the preferences
many times uneventfully.

What Musedit version and what Windows version are you on? Just so we know...

RE: Re: BEEP! An unsupported operation was attempted.

Hi Jack, Thanks for getting back to me, I'm running XP and Musedit 4.0.2. I
can edit most of the preferences; it's just that particular tab.

I ran the evaluation copy before upgrading to the full version I wonder if
that might have caused an issue.

Best regards

Guy

Re: BEEP! An unsupported operation was attempted.

My best suggestion would be to try installing (and using) a slightly older version, 4.0.1 or 4.0.0.. A note
to Doug Rogers (the programmer) directly at "info (at) musedit dot com" to request access to one of these
would be in order, I think.

It might be that in adapting Musedit to the new requirements of W-Vista he introduced a change that caused a
problem in XP... I speculate.

Re: BEEP! An unsupported operation was attempted.

Hi Jack

I really appreciate your taking the time to respond.

I'm still having problems, I tried the alternative XP installation that came on the disk. It has installed
3.90.3. It's a little bit more stable but now the Autosave function is doing my head in. It keeps coming up
with BEEP "There's been a problem replacing the old backup file.". I did try emailing Doug in the first
instance but he hasn't even acknowledged my email. It's all a bit disappointing. I really want this thing
to work and it's cost me money I can ill afford to spend.

Best regards

Guy

Hence the angst - April is breathing down our necks. Kind of makes me want to suggest leaving the material in
Tabledit until you have more time at your disposal. It would be nice if Musedit was the magic answer for all
notation problems, but it is sort of like working with a mule - not good if you are in a bind for time and
worried about it, you have to have time to learn how to finesse it to get results. Let us know how it goes.

Re: BEEP! An unsupported operation was attempted.

Hi Guy,

"It's a little bit more stable" - what does that mean? Any specific problem behavior other than the backup
file thing?

The "old backup file" bug is an old story - something doesn't work right there, I don't know what, but it
really shouldn't be a problem for you. Just rename the old backup file so Musedit can't see it. This doesn't
come up for me very often, but occasionally it does, and my routine response is to just nuke the old file and
let musedit make another one. I don't know if I even ever used an old backup file (in theory, you rename it as
*.med and open it if you need it) but I seem to remember not being able to open them.

On the other hand, if this persists after you rename the old *.bak file to hide it, then maybe you have a
problem. Musedit backs up your file regularly, maybe it even writes to it every time it autosaves, I'm not
sure about this.

"it's cost me money I can ill afford to spend."

Well, sorry, but it's chicken feed next to Finale, after all. The actual more relevant cost is in the time
required to learn to use Musedit efficiently, since it has more than its share of quirks (I didn't say bugs)
and depending on your actual use patterns you will have to discover or ask for the various work-arounds and
short cuts. There are lots of things Musedit will do that I don't use - I only write standard notation for
print, and I have learned to do that well and efficiently, but all the Midi and TAB functions I just ignore.

I get from the tone of your notes that you are experiencing some angst about getting into production mode
quickly, which is a difficult situation I admit... but I don't think there's any music notation software
out there that doesn't have a pretty serious learning curve anyway. So far you've only dealt with the
configuration.

Anyway, keep us posted, I get the direct feed and will share my 2 cents worth.

Re: BEEP! An unsupported operation was attempted.

Hi All

This is by way of a reply to Jack and John Baldry who was kind enough to contact me personally. We have actually
met a few years ago. It just goes to show what a small world it is.

I've been quiet because I've been getting my head down and getting on with the business of putting my course
material together. I'm pleased to say that it's going pretty well and I am very happy with the results. I've
stopped trying to import and am just writing the stuff from scratch. I'm pleased to report that I'm using
4.02 and that it hasn't crashed, or beeped, that is except when it's supposed to.

I'm sorry if I've given the wrong impression, the written word can sometimes give way to
mis-understandings. I am very much behind MusEdit and you will find me to be as passionate about it's
capabilities as I may have appeared about it's shortcomings.

I may have mentioned before that I am a programmer myself. Very often I have had to write database systems and
very often they have been replacements for a system that has outlived it's usefulness or is incompatible
with some new requirements. I had an eighteen month contract for which I was highly paid, with one of the
UK's largest mortgage brokers. The job consisted of keeping their old system up and running and, more
importantly, ensuring the accurate and seemless migration of data from the old system to the new one.

It is natural for people on acquiring a new system to want to have all the benefits of the old system plus all
the new whistles and bells that the new system will give them.

I bought MusEdit on the strength of it's capabilities and when I learnt that I could migrate my old stuff
across I was delighted. I wasn't particularly bothered which route I took, Midi, XML, ABC or text. I wasn't
bothered if I had to do some tidying up afterwards. I just wanted to take some of the ball ache out of
re-transcribing some of the tried and tested tab I had written in the past.

Perhaps because of my background and my ability to get up to speed very quickly with software, I was trying
out too many things at once. I did find it very unstable and was experiencing regular crashes. Difficult to

exploration 15 yrs ago) considering that he's a one-man show and has a day job.
