Closing depot incubation

The Incubator Depot Project has halted.

Please disallow posting to the following mailing lists:

  depot-ppmc <at> incubator.apache.org
  depot-dev <at> incubator.apache.org
  depot-cvs <at> incubator.apache.org

Please remove commit access for the following space:

  https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/depot

We would like to keep everything else like now, so that the source and
the lists are still available and will make transition elsewhere and
eventual restart easier.

TIA

Depot

Folks

Sorry I've been offline a while, I've had other priorities to take care of.

I will be sad to let Depot go, but I suspect it is time. I am starting to
believe that without a lot more community drive (or just outright individual
stubbornness to continue) that something like a version/repository idea is
too much to pull off. Further, I suspect that Javasoft ought be handling it,
not other groups. Also, I do suspect we tried to do too much (and yes, I
probably was over enthusiastic and helped over engineer some parts) so
couldn't keep up with it. That, and (for me) the transition into incubation
caused too much environment awkwardness, and I lost momentum.

Whatever the case, long and the short is that we didn't seem to build on a
simple use case, we didn't use it first and code it second. Basically it
stagnated underneath us. I don't think I'll ever quite understand why, but
despite technical merits (IMHO) something just didn't spark others. Maybe
marketing, maybe star alignment, definitely community.

That all said, I really really struggle with this. So much effort, so much
good stuff, so close. Gak! I hate letting go.

regards,

Adam

Closing Incubator Depot Incubation

I write to inform the Incubator that the development of the Incubator
Depot project has stopped. The original committers have no more time to
work on it and the project has failed to attract additional developers.

Therefore, I propose that the incubation is halted and considered 'failed'.

Objections?
Comments?

I applaude this effort :-)

Depot at work

I never seem to be able to sell depot at work.
At work putting the jars into CVS always seems to when out.
At work people don't like to trust the Internet to find jars.

Perhaps I could put some effort into writting depot code to manage a
CVS "repository"

Think of the use case of
What functions would we need to have for CVS backed repository.

Is it worth continuing?

It's some time that there is no active development on this project.

I'm sad to write this, but I don't think that things will change soon
enough. Apache wants communities, and I don't see one here (yet).

I wanted to try and help but I have no time, and without proper
documentation and energy to pursue this, we are not going anywhere.

Therefore I propose to drop the incubation of Depot in the Apache
Incubator and go back to Krysalis.

As an alternative/addition we could donate the code that is here to
Maven, where there is actually a repository system that is being
actively managed.
