Name: Ravindrababu Ravula

Project of interest: Hadoop.

Name of mentor: Help me find one.

Planned start date: Any date as early as possible.

Expected mid-term evaluation date: Let my mentor decide that. I am new
so it will be difficult for me to say that.

End date: I can't say that.

Expected benefits to the Apache Community as a result of my work: I
can contribute to the code and documentation of the project.

Approximate number of hours I intend to work on the project each week
and the number of weeks I expect it to take: 30 hours/week and 24
weeks.

A description of why I want to undertake this project and what I hope
to gain from it and the mentor programme:
Till now I have developed some applications using hadoop and now I
would like to contribute to the hadoop project itself. So that I could

I suppose you have subscribed to the Hadoop mailing lists already? You should
also have a look at the "How To Contribute" wiki page of Hadoop:

http://wiki.apache.org/hadoop/HowToContribute

Do you already have any particular topic or JIRA issue in mind you would like
to work on?

We got your original mail Ravi. But it's a holiday in many parts of the
world right now. Please be patient.

Ravi,

Do you have an answer for Isobels question? I realise you did not
highlight any specific activities in your overview, but now that you
have had time to look around is there anything specific you would like
to work on?

I'm going to take you details to the Hadoop community in a few minutes
to see if there is interest in mentoring you.

Re: Gearing up for GSoC 2010

Any thoughts on the below (29 Dec is a bad time to send such thoughts I
know)

As far as I remember, this is indeed the only thing that need to be
adjusted on the process compared to last year.

I believe JIRA can do that with a saved filter. We can embed that in the
comdev web site using a JIRA portlet. We should then encourage each
project to have a similar portlet on their own site, both for GSoC and
subsequent tasks.

I guess we should experiment with that first. Since Hadoop already has a
tag for newbie level issues I guess I could try it out (it may help Ravi
find some suitable projects to get started on too).

There is a flaw in this plan though, some projects don't use JIRA.

Use of the code-awards <at> list

Hi,

I understand we mean to continue using code-awards <at> for GSoC
coordination (assuming GSoC happens again), and I wonder if we
shouldn't discuss as many GSoC-related things as possible here
instead, to give that more visibility (as code-awards <at> is not publicly
visible).

I suggest using code-awards <at> only for things that need to be private
to GSoC mentors (i.e. discussing people issues as opposed to
project/program issues), and discuss everything else here, using a
[gsoc] tag in subject lines where appropriate.

We'd then use code-awards <at> as little as possible, like we do for other
private lists  <at> apache.

WDYT?
