Multimedia information retrieval is a cross-cutting field. Extending
beyond the borders of culture, art, and science, the search for digital
information is one of the major challenges of our time. Digital libraries,
bio-computing & medical science, the Internet and social networking sites,
streaming video, multimedia databases, cultural heritage collections and
P2P networks have created a worldwide need for new paradigms and techniques
on how to browse, search and summarize multimedia collections and more
generally how to afford efficient multimedia content consumption.

The 11th ACM International Conference on Multimedia Information Retrieval
(MIR) is the premier scientific meeting for discussing the latest advances
in the area of multimedia retrieval. MIR 2010 is on its second year as a
full ACM conference, following nine successful years as a workshop held in
conjunction with the ACM Multimedia Conference. The growth of MIR is a result
the growing importance of multimedia content in our lives.

CFP - Workshop on User Models for Motivational Systems (in conjunction with UMAP 2010)

[apologies for multiple postings]

============================================================
FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS

User Models for Motivational Systems:
the affective and the rational routes to persuasion

Sunday June 20, Big Island of Hawaii

In conjunction with UMAP 2010
User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalization

===============
KEY DATES
===============
- Paper submission: March 29, 2010
- Notification: May 3, 2010
- Final Copy Due: May 24, 2010
- Workshop date: June 20, 2010

===============
CALL FOR PAPERS
===============
Recent years have witnessed the growth of three parallel strands of research, all directing towards a more complex cognitive model of rational and extra-rational features, involving emotions, persuasion, motivation and argumentation.

On one side, Persuasive Technology is emerging as a very strong research field, interested in the use of interactive systems to influence human thought and behavior. The international Persuasive conference is now well established at its 5th edition, and a series of other small events, like the Persuasive Technology Symposia (with AISB in 2008 and 2009), confirm the importance of the field in the research landscape.

Parallel to this, Affective Computing is interested in the use, understanding and modelling of emotions and affect in computer systems. From the early 90s, which also saw two UM workshops (at UM03 and UM05), Affective Computing is now an established discipline, with an international conference (ACII), a professional society (HUMAINE) and, recently, a new journal (IEEE Trans. on Affective Computing).

Finally, Argument and Computation is also emerged in the past decade as a research strand interested in computational models of theories of argumentation and persuasion coming from Philosophy and Artificial Intelligence. Again, an increasing number of events dedicated to the topic, including two annual workshop series (Argumentation in MultiAgent Systems, now at its 7th edition, and Computational Models of Natural Argument, at its 10th edition) and a biennial international conference (COMMA), have recently been complemented by a new journal (Argument and Computation).

This workshop intends to sit at the intersection between these three areas of research, and focus on how adaptive and personalised systems can motivate people, for instance to improve health, or to use sustainable resources, or to achieve goals or specific skills, by using persuasion and argumentation techniques and/or techniques involving the affective and emotional sphere.

==================
TOPICS OF INTEREST
==================
The workshop will focus on strategies, techniques and evaluation for motivational systems that tailor to cognitive and affective state of the individual. Suggested topics include:

- user models for persuasive motivational systems:
   - Modeling receiver involvement, and position;
   - Modeling personality and affective state for persuasion,
   - Identifying relevant affective aspect in user modeling,
   - Integrating affective and non-affective aspect in user models,
   - Recognition and interpretation of the users’ communicative intentions and affective states and updating of the user model,
   - Investigating the relationship between recognized affective states and their impact on users’ beliefs and motivation,
   - Effect of cultural differences on persuasion;

- adaptive strategies for persuasion:
   - Generating persuasive arguments;
   - Ontologies for persuasion;
   - Persuasive discourse processing: understanding what users say in terms of argumentation schemes;
   - Computational models of argumentation tailored to a specific user;
   - Rhetoric and affect: the role of emotions, personalities, etc. in models of persuasion and argumentation;

- motivation and affect:
   - mutual interactions and synergies,
   - peripheral routes of persuasion (humor, mood induction, enhancing source credibility)

- persuasive interfaces:
   - ambient persuasion,
   - use of embodied conversational agents,
   - serious games

- applications and evaluations:
   - intelligent tutoring systems,
   - health promotion,
   - e-democracy,
   - advertising,

Deadline Extension: PERVASIVE 2010 Workshop: Pervasive Advertising and Shopping

===============================================================================

DEADLINE EXTENSION

Workshop on Pervasive Advertising and Shopping
in conjunction with Pervasive 2010, May 17 2010, Helsinki, Finland

Submission Deadline: February 8, 2010

===============================================================================

Due to several requests we extend the submission deadline to February 8, 2010.

Pervasive computing technologies such as a variety of ever-smaller mobile devices, public digital displays, and location sensing and tracking tools are rapidly adopted by the advertising and retail industries. Adoption is driven by the comprehensive business models facilitated by these technologies, a fact that leads us to believe that advertising and shopping could well be amongst the most important deployment domains for pervasive technologies. Furthermore, the two industries are intimately linked: advertising that is the communication of sponsored messages to inform, convince, and persuade to buy leads to shopping, that is the examination and purchasing of goods.

However, the opportunities, benefits and drawbacks of pervasive technologies in these domains only now are beginning to be understood. Moreover the current trend whereby power is shifting towards consumers, makes specific aspects of advertising and shopping such as brand experience, word of mouth, and audience measurement gain importance, and provides opportunities for pervasive technologies to generate some true benefit for consumers.

We believe that our research community has a responsibility to contribute towards the improved understanding of the implications of this change and whenever possible to play a leading role in shaping it in a positive and meaningful way. To this end, this workshop looks at the future of advertising and shopping from the perspective of pervasive computing. It aims to provide a foundational structure for the field and will attempt to sketch a roadmap for further research and deployment challenges in this domain.

We invite papers that address any relevant issues in the fields of pervasive advertising and shopping.
In addition to online proceedings, selected workshop papers will be considered for publication in a special issue of Personal and Ubiquitous Computing.

PAPER SUBMISSION AND PARTICIPATION

We ask potential attendees to submit up to 10-page position papers describing how their research relates to the particular focus on the workshop. Position papers should also include description of ongoing research, results obtained, experience gathered, new ideas, future projects or questions on topics related to pervasive advertising and shopping. Each participant is also asked to provide a short paragraph (up to 200 words) on their vision of advertising and shopping in 25 years from now. All submissions will be peer-reviewed.

More information can be found at

http://pervasiveadvertising.org/pervasiveadvertisingandshopping/

All submissions must be submitted via email to Florian Alt:
florian.alt-2ePcrahqm8iELgA04lAiVw@public.gmane.org

Papers should be no longer than 10 pages. All papers must be submitted in PDF in Springer LNCS format. At least one author for each accepted paper is expected to attend the workshop.

Selected papers from the workshop will be considered for expansion and inclusion in a special issue of the Personal and Ubiquitous Computing (PUC) journal on Pervasive Advertising and Shopping.

Motivation
==========

The workshop follows the previous SPeL 2008
(http://software.ucv.ro/~epopescu/spel2008/) and SPeL 2009
(http://software.ucv.ro/~epopescu/spel2009/) workshops  held in
conjunction with the SAINT 2008 conference
(http://www.icta.ufl.edu/saint08/) and WI/IAT 2009 conference
(http://www.wi-iat09.disco.unimib.it/) respectively. The general topic of
the workshop is the social and personal computing for web-supported
learning communities. This year, the workshop focuses on social and
intelligent systems in education, with particular interest on aspects
related to data, information, and knowledge within such systems.

Web-based learning is moving from centralized, institution-based systems
to a decentralized and informal creation and sharing of knowledge. Social
software (e.g., blogs, wikis, podcasts, and media-sharing services) is
increasingly being used for e-learning purposes, helping to create novel
learning experiences and knowledge. In the world of pervasive Internet,
learners are also evolving: the so-called “digital natives” want to be in
constant communication with their peers, they expect an individualized
instruction and a personalized learning environment, which automatically
adapt to their individual needs.

Social learning is based on creating and sharing information and knowledge
within the learning community and personalized learning can only take
place if enough data about learners (e.g., their behavior, actions,
characteristics, and so on) have been gathered and correctly analyzed and
interpreted. For both social and personalized learning, the role of data,
information, and knowledge is essential. In this context, the workshop
addresses the challenges of social and personal computing in Web-supported
learning communities focusing on aspects related to acquiring and managing
data, information, and knowledge. Its aim is to provide a forum for
discussing new trends and initiatives in this area, including research
about the planning, development, application, and evaluation of
intelligent e-learning systems, where people can learn together in a
personalized way through social interaction with other learners.

Topics of interest
==================

The workshop topics cover all aspects of intelligent systems in
e-learning, particularly related to issues about data, information, and
knowledge in social and personalized learning, including (but not limited
to):
	- Ontologies and semantic Web for e-learning
	- Metadata, folksonomies and tagging
	- Knowledge management in e-learning systems
	- Educational data mining
	- Student data privacy and security
	- Interoperability issues
	- Intelligent learner and group modeling
	- Collaborative filtering and recommendations for learners
	- Social information retrieval
	- Semantic social networks
	- Knowledge community formation and support
	- Web 2.0 and social computing for learning
	- Virtual spaces for learning communities

learning experiences and knowledge.
